RECIPE: LOUKOUMADES - Greek Honey Donuts

1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1/4 tsp. ground allspice (1 ml)
1/2 tsp. salt (3 ml)
1/2 package of instant yeast (1 tsp. )
¼ cup warm water
1 Tbsp. sugar (15 ml)
1/2 cup buttermilk(125 ml)
1 egg
1/2 tsp. vanilla (2.5 ml)

about 1 cup olive oil for frying (250 ml)

½ cup Greek honey (125ml)
Ground cinnamon for serving

In the bowl of an electric mixer with paddle attachment, combine the dry ingredients and blend. In a small bowl stir together the warm water, yeast and 1 Tbsp. sugar let stand for five minutes, until foamy. Combine the egg with the buttermilk and the vanilla in another bowl and stir until blended. Add the wet ingredients to the flour mixture and blend on low speed until all flour has been incorporated. Batter will be loose and sticky.

Cover with plastic and let rest until doubled about 1 ½ hours.

Preheat oil for frying in a small heavy skillet. Oil should be about 3/4 “ deep for frying.

Using 2 tablespoons, scoop a spoon full of batter and use second spoon to release into hot oil, keeping oil at same temperature. Fry about 8 balls at a time, for 1 minute on each side or until evenly browned. Remove immediately with slotted spoon to a paper towel lined platter.

While donuts are still warm, drizzle with honey and dust with cinnamon.

Serves 8-10

My Yiayia lived across the street from us, and how I remember with tears in my eyes, her running over, still in her bib apron and pantoúfles, with a giant bowl of Loukoumades. One of my FAVORITE treats growing up, next to her rizogalo. I haven't made a batch of Loukoumades since my son got married 10 years ago. That will change soon!

In my hometown we have a huge Greek Festival every year in the parking lot of a Greek Orthodox church downtown. Thousands of people come for the food, the dancing and just plain fun. Honey Balls (that what we call them lol) are my favorite in the sweet category! Thanks for posting this, I'm going to give it a try!

These must be regional, I've seen recipes with Cardamom (which I hate lol). The ones from home didn't have that but your buttermilk addition I bet tastes great!

Hi Christine, I thought you can add the instant yeast to the flour and no proofing is required. Did you use the active dry yeast instead? Thanks.

Tasty. 😤😤😤
America has donuts, France has Beignets, Italy has Bomboloni, Latin America has Bunuelos and Greece has Loukoumades. Almost every country has a signature donut recipe.

Thanks for writing the recipe. Otherwise the video is worthless without it! In fact you should always add the recipes in the "Description" section like most people do.

I've been making these for my elderly mother every Epiphany, Jan 6, for the past 5 years. She's very old world and believes that goblins, Kallikantzaroi, inhabit her house every Christmas and must be expelled by a ritual of throwing loukoumades onto the roof. While screaming at the top of your lungs, "YOU'VE BEEN FED!!!! NOW LEAVE MY HOME!!!"
