"No, I don't want to have to sit through a video for something that should be right here in the docs!". An hour of retracing exactly what your intro shows, here I am. Thank you!

I also spent several hours trying to work out how to do this. Thanks for your video now I do not have to spend a lot of time to do this manually.
I agree with some of the comments below, this solution should be part of blender. I think it is a basic requirement.

You are a legend. My models are made in Blender Render and it's been a headache trying to figure out how to convert to cycles so I can utilise the mods and effects done in cycles. Looks like you are using 2.6 and the script works fine on 2.79
Thank you for making my hobby easier.

Thank you so much!!!
I've been struggling so much with this and all the links I found were either dead or incompatible with 2.79, this is a HUGE help!

Thanks for this video. Useful for editing old objects in the latest version of Blender. I used this script in 2.68 for an old object. In that version the object was all black but it was fine when I loaded it in 3.4.

Uhhhh I have a problem, when I go to save it as a PY file and bring it into Blender, it does not show up when I install it, like it shows up in the file thing when I click on the install addons thing, but not where all the addons are after I install it, also I only have the "material" instead of that and "materials" for some reason, I am using 2.79 like the video shows

This didn't work for me at first. So I tried running it as an admin(which didn't help), then I checked the code and there were two blank lines at the end of the code. I deleted them so it ended on "register()" and that fixed it.
