If the employment law is rubbish then there isn't much any union can do. I have been in several unions in more than 1 country and all that happened is that employees who worked hard and were most productive received the same pay rise as those who did the bare minimum. The upshot was that the former either left the union or left the employer.
If the union aims to protect employee rights then ok but if it aims to deliver 'equity' then ultimately the employer will find ways to automate and then get rid of staff.
