1) that’s not top down. Top down has to do with processing, which you didn’t even mention. (Starting with all your bus compression/EQ already turned on, before you start mixing, for example)

2) this just shows volume level balancing, which is just scraping the surface of what mixing is.

I think this is a really good mixing technique although I feel like it only applies for some genres of music for example I make dubstep and usually the kick has to be extremely loud to be able to punch through the mix to compete with the synth and sub with a good sidechain, so my kick is usually around - 3db instead
