This Bug is the Key to Fly Fishing Success!

If you ever see a trout eating off the surface… Chances are, its eating and aquatic insect! 🦟💥🐟

And the more us fly anglers know about bugs… The more fish we’re gonna put in the net!

There are 4 bug types that make up the majority of a trout’s diet… But today, I want to focus on Caddis.

Caddis larvae grow up on the bottom of a river. They can be either free-living or build cases around themselves as a shelter.

Once they’ve grown up and are ready to move out of mom & dad’s basement… Caddis Pupa move to the surface and hatch into Adults.

They’ll hang out in the bushes for a while, fly around a bit, mate, lay their eggs, and die.

It’s when these Caddis leave the comfort of their stream side home and come back to the water to lay their eggs…

…they become an easy meal ticket for trout. 💥🐟

Caddis aren’t too hard to identify. Larvae can be free living or cased and are pretty easy to find under rocks.

Adults have tent like wings, long antennae, and no tails.

Caddis become active during the early spring and are out and about all Summer.

My favorite way to fish them is with a dry dropper rig. I love tying on a bigger caddis pattern on top and a bead-head caddis nymph underneath. Fish will eagerly take both.

My go-to dry fly pattern is the Elk Hair Caddis in a variety of sizes and colors. And I also like using a Caddis emerger when dealing with pickier fish.

For nymphs, I love hare’s ears, caddis pupa, caddis larvae, and peeping caddis.
