The reason why you should stop sharpening the shovel partway up the side is in case your boot slips off sideways and down the side of the shovel you won't cut into your boot.

Your wildland videos are the most interesting part of your channel for me. I am a volunteer firefighter in Texas, and I am currently taking my willdland class to expand my skills. As a result, I very much enjoy getting input with a good deal of experience in that field.

Nice video Cody. My name is Wyatt and I'm fourteen and id like to thank you for all of your videos and all of your knowledge you share on your channel. You are the reason I'm getting into Wild land firefighting and I'm training with my local fire department. Yes due to my age I cant leagley go on a fire but we recently had a fire on the edge of our property and I think it would be a very good thing to know and when I get out of high school wild land firefighting is definitely something I would like to get in to. Again thank you for your videos they are great.

That sharpening gauge is really cool, every wildland firefighter should have one.  I would love to see how your new pack is set up, what gear and supplies are in it. But you gotta bring back Alan, to get his view on it.

+Wranglerstar Hey Cody I believe the turn step sharpening limit is in case your foot slips off the shovel and slides down the edge so as to keep from cutting your foot/boot! Thanks for the great content!!!

Hey Cody, that is a NFES 0510 or 5210-01-324-2776 in the GSA catalogue. They are about $30 which is why I've never bought one. I wish they'd put out the drawing so everybody could just print it and make their own.

We have a lot of them on the District. We have them in our fire cache and I use them quite regularly when rehabbing tools in the shop or from our engine. It's not something you would really carry in your line gear, but it's super handy to have on the truck or back at the shop. I'm pretty sure it's still available through GSA, but I don't do the ordering. I can figure it out for you if you would like.

Gday Cody, in Australia the McLeod or 'Rakehoe' as it is called here is the primary hand tool we use when constructing hand line. Pulaski we use more for blacking out, busting open logs, digging stump holes, roots etc. Always interesting to note the differences between wild land fire agencies in our countries! Cheers
