Chord Tone Soloing using Shape Targeting

Shape targeting is the second approach to chord tone soloing in this series. It refers to identifying shapes within the scale box which correspond to the chord tones and targeting to land on those notes within the shape. These notes if played simultaneously will result in a chord and if played sequentially, will result in an arpeggio. However, the objective is not to play a chord or arpeggio but as single note lines in a solo. In other words, to develop when soloing, the ability to recognize these shapes as changing ‘safe zones’ in the fretboard that contain the chord tones.

This video will go through the general thought process involved in Shape Targeting and take you through how to best develop this approach according to different string groups.
