I typically wear a cheap homage watch prior to buying the real thing just to make sure I like a watch.

Homage watches are great value especially from Pagani Design, Steeldive, San Martin, etc...

Our bathroom has a motion sensor light, and my wife hates when it goes off while she's sitting on the toilet. Meanwhile, I absolutely love it because it gives me the perfect chance to admire how luminous my watch is 😄

Homage watches are awesome if you don’t overspend – just remember, they won’t go up in value, and servicing them isn’t worth it. While wearing your homage, you can feel smug knowing you won’t stress if it gets damaged, lost, or stolen, and no future worries about paying £250+ for a service.

Coming from someone who has a Rolex Submariner 14060m. I have 2 Heuer's the 980 026, Heuer 981.006 and the TAG Heuer 989 113 Night diver even though the 980 026 is black pvd coated and the 981.006 is olive drab pvd and the Night diver has a full lumed dial. They were based off the Submariner design but I love them. They are Cult classics that saved Heuer as a brand

14:55 Marc and Long Island Watch started as a Seiko homage brand and later began creating his own designs. I think brands that do that are fine, and in general, homages that put their own spin on the designs they clone are also great. I guess one huge difference with Marc is that his homage was of a discontinued model (SKX007) and his version made improvements to the original (sapphire crystal, better bracelet, etc.). I guess that would be the ideal for an homage brand.

I have a San Martin homage of a Tudor Ranger (with a few design changes such as smaller size and polished chamfers). It gave me the chance to try out the design on my wrist for an extended period...and I eventually fell out of love with the design. Much better to do so with a $250 watch than a $2, 500 watch.

There are plenty of Seiko, Citizen and other more and less expensive big-brand watches that are strongly inspired by classic Rolex and other designs.

The ones I don't like are the obviously total replicas that even mimic the exact same text (and number of lines of text, when speaking of Submariner clomages) to be as close looking as humanly possible.

As a relative newcomer to this I find the enthusiast's relationships with brand fascinating. My first purchase was a Hamilton Khaki field watch which I bought as I really liked the look of it. Apparently in buying it that also gets me a connection to the heritage that comes with it, and the fact that these watches (or something vaguely similar) were worn on the wrists of US GIs during WW2, despite ownership of the brand changing hands several times since and the watch now being manufactured on a different continent. If 20+ years working in ads has taught me anything, its that a brand is intellectual property and the value of that IP is whatever the owner of the brand can convince the consumer it is worth. The problem the watch industry faces is that consumers are waking up to this, which explains why so many people are willing to adopt new brands such as San Martin which can offer great quality at a price they can tolerate. The more brands like SM can deliver on quality, value and increasingly originality, the greater the perception and equity of their brand will grow while the likes of Seiko may well see theirs heading in the opposite direction.
I love my Hamilton but if I was to go back, I may well go for something like a Baltany. I wouldn't swap them now as its not worth the hassle, but the argument that as you get more into watches, you're more likely to go for bigger brands, just doesn't work for me.

Watching later in the day and really enjoyed the chat. I’m a fairly new collector, and I have a couple Clomage Watches, and you hit the nail on the head (for me). I genuinely enjoy my Clomage Watches, but there is no sense of pride versus when I wear my Seiko, Orient, Casio etc. And the fact you would buy a Pagani Speedy Clomage versus a Moonswatch tells me you are an enthusiast first and foremost. Thanks again for the great chat! (edit) I’m looking at a Casio Oceanus for my next watch. It’s definitely going to be quartz. I even like the PRX 35mm Digital (not joking). Thanks again!

Great show as ever. Scurfa Diver one titanium…. Possibly a Hamilton Khaki Field quartz 33mm, really pays tribute to early field watch size

Thanks for the show Russ. I'm looking at getting a Christopher Ward next on the old interest free over 12 months. That'll be most of my pocket money for next year. Also tempted by the new cleaner looking F-91WBs as a wee Christmas present from my kids - hints have been dropped - fingers crossed

Gonna pick up a Casio AQS-810W (hopefully a blacked out version)...again. I think it's one of the most underrated Casios due to it's features. I had one and gave it to my cousin that is a fisherman in the Caribbean, as I thought he could really use it. They've gone up in price a little bit though.

Thank you so much for replying to my comment when you were live (yes, that is a Backdraft profile picture. I’m a retired firefighter). I have the Steel Dive because I like the look, I will never shell out $10K+ for a Rolex anyway (don’t have that kind of money, anyway 😂). I respectfully disagree that SD is a clomage (I prefer homage, but we are all entitled to our opinions). I also have a Heimdallr “Captain Willard”. Both are well built IMHO. I do love the history behind Seiko and my Arnie. That's the primary reason I bought those. Same goes for my Citizen Promaster eco drive bn0150-28e diver (both proper dive watches). Love the live shows. Heck, love ALL your videos. Keep up the good work, my friend! Cheers! P.S. I’m a huge Casio enthusiast, too. 😉👍🏻

Glad to see you talk a lot this. What bothers me is that people accept them as homages, because they change the name on the dial. They are for the most part nothing more than copies/replicas. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve also had a few but I don’t deny they are copying and not homaging.
