In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy demonstrates how to make leather polishing sticks from wooden blanks and chamois. These polishing sticks are great for controlling the application of buffing compound. This can be helpful if you are trying to maintain an oxidized surface.

Nice demonstration, we like being finishers so happy to be here. Great clean non transferring environmental issues share, no cross contamination.

I have just made a chamois polishing stick on dowelling and I'm blown away with the lovely effect it created on a silver ring - without any polishing compound!! A wonderful, silky look! I am definitely going to be making more, so thank you so much for this video :-)

I'm experimenting with different polishing techniques and materials. I recently started using chamois as a material to hold various polishing compounds. It works very well, provided I don't get cross-contamination from other grits or just gritty dirt lying around my workspace. The best polishing investment I've made so far is to buy an assortment of compounds in various grit sizes. Rio Grande sells a set that's a fun learning experience to try and see what various grits will do.

This will be perfect for my needs. I had felt polishing wheels for a Dremel tool but I found that they were too narrow to cover an entire surface of my pieces, so that when I polished them there would be streaks. thank you!

Great idea! I already do something like this when sanding small areas, but actually gluing the paper to a stick would help a lot. Q: is there any difference in result to hand polishing vs. using a variable-speed rotary tool w/ felt and various polishing compounds?
