Man the accountability part is kicking my ass. I’ve been learning for about 3 months and I went from playing everyday to just a couple days a week so fast

1.2 years in here, 0.8 self taught and the rest taking lessons. I went into lessons knowing all the basic concepts, all the open chords and started working on bar chords. I think this is the perfect inflection point of taking lessons. I think I would have been bored and frustrated learning basic concepts week to week. Now I'm learning at such an amazing rate and being held back when I need it and being pushed when I need it. Song curation with specific challenges has really been the biggest influence.

Over the years I've tried and given up on trying to learn guitar over the years. A few years ago I went though multiple teachers trying to find the right fit - none of which benefit me because they were focused on their agenda, not my questions. The last teacher literally told me to practice more while playing with his new 2000- Les Paul he picked up a couple of days ago when I asked what I should be focusing on since I haven't seen an improvement in over a month.

On a someone what positive note, I've decided to give it another try and found this channel to be more productive than all the lessons, books and what not I have tried in the past.

I'm just part way through your video but aside from the insight you are providing, I love the humor you are peppering your content with.

Accountability and structure are the main reasons for lessons for me. Also a good instructor that fits you.. I had one I did not feel was helpful but my second one has been awesome

Just picked up a Les Paul Eppy. I am following you and your tutalidge. I used to play a (very) little but now I got plenty time to work on stuff.

Great video on a topic I think a lot of beginners are struggling with. I started playing guitar 9 months ago at 47 years old. I tried Justin Guitar, Fender’s learning service and Pickup Music. I have stuck with Pickup Music because they have a distinct curriculum (which I require) and personal feedback built in. And for the more advanced players they have genre/style specific courses. There’s almost too many options which makes finding what works for you difficult, but being patient and willing to try multiple options should get you headed in the right direction. If you want to play the most important thing is to just start playing!

I'm a newbie who tried the YouTube thing and Guitar Tricks, and I agree completely about the road map issue. I've had a few in person lessons, and added this channel and the ChordBank app and I find that's a good mix for me at the moment. I can ask questions at the lessons and get reminders online.

Before YouTube was a really a thing, learn from guitar for dummies, then took lessons learning to solo the book couldn't help with my mistakes. Then the point I'm good enough just kept my instructor on to give feedback back infrequently. Now I teach as well. Just on the progression issue a good teacher will give you things to learn quick and to work on. You can also learn stuff outside of lesson, I personally believe that structure and discipline is useful to be a "good musician." You can be a "good/great guitarist" but you only really can play what you want. Which is fine btw, take the instrument as fair as you can and enjoy it

I started around 2 months ago i think. My biggest issues are:
- What should I learn?
- How should I learn it?
- At what point can I start with the next thing?

So far I've mostly practised easy songs. My progress is pretty slow but at least it's not boring to the point of giving up. At some point I might get a teacher. But for now I'll continue using free youtube resources

61, 6-month beginner, for what it's worth, I think your "spot on". I started because I wanted to make music... not necessarily play songs. I do understand that simple songs are taught for more reasons than just to... know the song. Practice does make perfect. Repetition is necessary. I am now at a point... at which I have questions and need the feedback you talked about. My mechanics are still crap, but things are starting to make sense and get easier. But guitar is hard. Thanks for the share.

Not decided if I should choose a classical or acoustic to buy and learn
The classical is more tempting considering the less pain on your fingers

Hey Kevin I have been following your videos, just wanted to give you my feedback. I watched many different channels and just wanted to tell you I really like your theoretical approach. Just for the rythmic (counting 1, 2, 3, 4) is not something I think I have seen in other videos! You deserve way more views and I am sure you'll get them :) Keep it up.
P.S: Do you think you'll make some videos about fingerstyle (strumming/beginner patterns, etc..) ? not sure if it is something you can do!

Thanks a lot for the content !

As a self taught guitarist the biggest issue is no corrective mechanism. If I’m learning to sweep pick (which I currently am… slowly 😅) if my technique is bad I really won’t know so I can learn the wrong way.

Checklist for your technique:
Does it sound the same as the online instructor plays it?
Does something hurt?
Do you feel comfortable?
Do you have unneccessary strain somewhere?
Does it groove?
Then your technique can't be wrong.

O great and humble Prometheus...will you teach me guitar? 😂

I tried to learn through an instructor the problem was the courses were all over the place and I didn't have time to learn everything to the point that I felt confident playing it plus the fact that it was classes with 10 other people everyone was a different skill level
