Brilliant. Took me hours to find a good tutorial for unpacking archive with Python and this did the job. Plus, you are easy to understand. Unlike a lot of the other people on here doing similar.

Great, I in the same way with Gary Cook, very simple and usefull, it will be very helpfull if you add a function where if the file already exist, it wont be decompressed, thanks a lot

I am trying to open a .gz file but I cannot install patool using the method you did. Any suggestions?

can someone help me, I got these files generated from ABBYY reader, they are gz files and inside they have XML files. I can open, see and extract the files with winrar, but I cant do a thing with those XML files, I tried a viewer called XML viewer, I tried importing it into microsoft tried to open them with nothing, can someone tell me how to use those xml files.
