PTC Thermistors: Overview

Показать описание
PTC Thermistors: Overview PTC thermistors are ceramic components whose resistance increases immediately when the temperature exceeds the allowable limit. This feature makes them perfect for various applications in modern electronic equipment. For example, they are used to protect devices from melting at overload currents. They protect motors against short circuits. Also they are used in switching power supplies for delayed inclusion, in TV CRTs and computer monitors for demagnetizing shadow masks, which helps preserve the color purity; in starters of refrigerator compressor motors. The thermal protection of motors and transformers is another example of the versatility of PTC thermistors. Their popularity allows using them in measuring devices, in automatic control devices, in consumer and automotive electronics, data storage devices and, quite naturally, in telecommunications. PTC thermistors can also be stand-alone heating elements. They are used as additional heating elements, nozzle heaters, for heating carburetors in cars, and in many household appliances such as washing machines (door locks), hair dryers, etc. PTC thermistors are made of ceramics on the basis of barium titanate. Ceramics is a good insulator with a high resistance. Ceramic PTC thermistors limit the dissipation of energy by increasing the resistance, thereby reducing the current to a safe value. In contrast to conventional fuses, there is no need to replace thermistors. It quickly recovers its protective properties after a short period of cooling. Our assortment includes Epcos PTC-thermistors for protection against overload currents from the series B597, B598 and B599. PTC thermistors can also be used as temperature control sensors. They are effectivel for detecting whether the temperature limit in industrial equipment or in any liquid is increased. Thermistor is put in thermal contact with the device, which must be protected from overheating. When the nominal temperature limit of this device is reached, the thermistor resistance suddenly increases. The control unit can use this signal to automatically turn off the power supply. Our assortment includes Epcos PTC thermistors used as temperature limit sensors from the series B59025 and B59901. We have briefly described the PTC thermistors presented in our assortment. You can find the description and technical documentation on our website.
