In my younger days, I saw a movie of Oliver Twist on TV, then read the book and loved it because...no spoilers. The next year I saw the 1960s musical movie and appreciated it.

Interesting discussion! I haven’t quite finished all of Dickens’ novels, (I’ve read 10/14) but I feel like I’ve got a decent grasp of his work. I’d be really interested to hear your thoughts on David Copperfield or Bleak House.

I thought Oliver Twist was decently enjoyable, but it’s definitely one of my lesser favorite dickens novels. I think his later career epics are the height of his power. (BH, DC, Little Dorrit, Dombey, OMF)

I think in particular, hearing you didn’t love GE, that you may really appreciate DC. It’s his only other fully first person novel, and I think it’s got a much better cast with more of the comic elements than GE.

Bleak House is half told in first person, which makes it a little more accessible than his other doorstoppers just in the way of prose. I think it’s perhaps his most complex plot, but probably his highest achievement.

Oliver Twist is a good novel, though! He just got better and better has his career progressed!

Hey Will, I love your content and your passion for literature! Do you have any tips for reading more analytically? I feel like I’m just consuming books and not engaging with the material as much as I’d like to. Thank you and keep up the good work!

To me The Great Expectations is better than Oliver Twist
