Villa-Lobos Prelude 3 Acoustic Archtop Guitar

Classical music has been played on steel-strung acoustic archtop guitars from the day they were invented. I'm just continuing that tradition with this classic homage to Bach by the Brasilian composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos. Not a note has been changed from the original - it fits plectrum playing beautifully.

I love to hear music in the classical tradition played on an acoustic archtop. So often these instruments are thought to have a rather limited application, but as you demonstrate, they are well suited for genres well beyond the jazz and swing with which they are generally associated. Spectacular playing, Rob; this Elferink is a perfect fit for you.

A magical combination of Brazilian culture, an archtop jazz guitar and the overwhelming experience of a musician like Rob MacKillop. Proof that music knows no boundaries of time, space or means when played with soul. I'm sorry to have discovered this post after so long. Thanx, Rob!❤️♥️❤️

you're not brazilian, but plays beautifuly a brazilian composer... I'm brazilian, and here in Brazil only few people know Villa-Lobos.. even classical players dont play villa... they play chopin, bach, but dont play villa... thats sad... I love Villa-Lobos. my favorite composers are Villa-Lobos and Rachmaninoff

Beautiful. I love the timbre of a fine Arch Top. The clarity is so pure. I think because of the pure clarity without heavy Rich sustain— attempting to record Solo with them is much more difficult. Whatever mic you’re using worked wonderfully.

Thankyou! I have been experimenting with a classical sound on a mellow archtop for some time now, I was always searching for someone who also felt this way about the possibilities too!

I'm very young but, in the recent years, I've dedicated myself to study my culture and our heroes. From history to art, I begun to love my country. Nobody teached me that, so I learned it all alone. I found beauty, something to feel proud of. Maybe if I showed these to my fellow brazilians, they would start feeling the same way... They didn't.
But sir, I can't put into words how happy I get when I see somebody valorizing my culture and respecting it so much like you do.
Thank you very much.

so, do you think archtop can be appropriate for classical musics?

This is lovely. I've only just found your channel and it will give me many hours of happy listening. I think this brings out something essential in Villa Lobos, whose beautiful guitar music can often be played in too precious and reverential a style by classical guitarists. I'd love to hear his Choro no 1 like this.

Beautiful! And your archtop sounds great. How did you recorded the audio for this video? It's just a phone, or did you use a mic? Thanks, fabio

Extremely beautiful! I´m Brazilian and don´t always enjoy Villa Lobos interpretations we can hear around. But yours sounds truly touching and original. Congratulations!

Very fine performance, proving that the 'horse' in hand is definitely for the 'course', . with lovely sustain. The texture of the piece is similar to the 'chord-melody' style in jazz and popular music which, alas, is not true of the other four preludes.
