What Luke was describing sounds like a stim, rather than a tick. Stimming is self stimulating behavior, something that everyone does to a certain extent, like hair twirling and beard stroking, but is more common among people with ADHD, autistic people, and some other conditions, and can be more pronounced or unusual than in neurotypical people.

thank u so much for this!! as someone with tourette's it can be difficult seeing so much misinformation and the strong stigma surrounding this disorder so this is mega helpful to the community. so informative and insightful, even i learnt so many new things! 🥺💘

my Tourette's treatment is basically to just treat everything else i have so I'm less stressed so i tic less. With coprolalia (inappropriate vocalizations like swearing) its just to not suppress them. Luke was actually spot on with the thing if you're just talking about coprolalia.

I find it interesting that concentrating hard can make tics less likely because I've realised that the exact same thing happens to me whilst coughing, sometimes when I have a really bad cold I'll play the piano for ages just because I'll be less likely to cough whilst doing it

It’s worth to point out that autism is in fact a disorder. It is a neurological, developmental spectrum disorder. Just wanted to add a little more information to the conversation. This was greatt💙

My dad used to sneeze when he looked at the sun. You are not alone, Luke.

I’ve had (noticeable) tics for about a year and a half now. Since i found out that what i had were tics i found out i had them for almost my whole life. The problem is that my parents are pretty hard if the topic is my tics cuz they think that it aren’t tics but just bad habits. I’ve tried to get them to research it and finally see the difference but they haven’t had the time. But since you guys just posted this i’m just gonna show them this and hopefully this will let them notice. This is also definitely the most informative and correct video i’ve seen so far about tourette’s. So thank you so much can’t wait for the next podcast😁

I don't like to describe myself as having Tourette, since I haven't got an official diagnostic, although it's pretty obvious I do have it, wich leads me to evade questions when people notice my tics and are like "Are you ok?"

I do sneeze when look at the sun/a bright sky
I use it as a hack though, when I need to sneeze but can’t get it out I look at a light (lamp or bulb) or out a window and the sneeze will come out, very handy 😂

Corry: It's a choice between do I want to have tics or do I want shaking and random stiffness.

Me (has both): '---' welp

I am autistic, it is a disorder and I’m not offended by that term, it’s just what it is.

Adhd medication actually tends to worsen tics as it helps a person get more dopamine while Tourette’s is typically treated by decreasing reception of dopamine. I’ve experienced my tics getting worse first hand upon taking my adhd meds. Haha it’s a struggle.
