Visiting SASKATCHEWAN - Canada's rural wasteland

My first-ever trip to the Canadian province of Saskatchewan and the city of Regina. Saskatchewan is a land of farmers, wheat, and perogies, but is it as dull as people say?

Saskatchewan resident checking in. Want to know why Saskatchewan is so windy? Alberta blows and Manitoba sucks lol

I am from Toronto ON, moved to Regina SK almost 4 years ago, and I understand on a deep level how comparing Regina to a larger city can be underwhelming. There are some hidden gems in Saskatchewan though, it took me some time to find out about. If you ever do visit SK again, I'd be happy to help design the itinerary.

I think it's safe to say that Saskatchewan is the Midwest of Canada in every sense of the word

Canada did not particularly incentivize immigration from the Russian Empire. It incentivized immigration from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which included parts of modern southern Poland and Western Ukraine. The vast majority of Ukrainians came to Canada from this area.

Pierogi are of course a shared Polish/Ukrainian dish. The particular name "pierogi" is Polish.

Also, the supposedly Ukrainian name you showed was Polish.

Apparently Saskatchewan makes up nearly 47% of Canada's farmland. Thank you Saskatchewan!

I feel like not enough people are talking about the pronunciation of Regina, I was cracking up like an 8 year old every time he said it

As an American I actually went to Regina twice a few years ago for work. Seemed like a nice place enough. Of course coming from the Midwest it seemed very familiar. One thing that did impress me was that the most popular local sport appeared to be the Canadian Football which I did not expect. I bought a Regina Roughriders scarf and blended effortlessly amongst the locals who were none the wiser that an American was in their midst...

"Let's go see what Saskatchewan has to offer" - Never leaves Regina. That's like wanting to experience a high end stake house but ordering the soup of the day. Not saying Saskatchewan is the most impressive place in the world, but you sure as hell can't see it from Regina. Even Saskatoon is much nicer, although still pretty bland. If you want to see Sask, go visit a big farm operation down south - they are actually pretty cool when you get into an operation like that, go fishing up North. Go hunting in the fall. Go to a Ukrainian dance comp. Literally pretty much anything other than walking around a city in a province known for it's "country features".

Hi J.J.

I was born and raised around Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and continue to live here. I appreciate you doing a little tour of our province and the capital. I'm Ukrainian and perogies are a big part of our tradition. The Saskatchewan Roughrider's fan buy more merchandise than all the other Canadian Football League teams combined because for the longest time it was this province's only professional sports team. We now have a professional lacrosse team (Saskatchewan Rush) that is very successful as well.

It is mostly flat and quite windy. I grew up a mixed grain and beef cattle farm which is a big part of this province's economy. No, we don't stook wheat sheaves anymore. We have very expensive combines that can cut the stem, separate the grain and shred the waste for us.

I actually didn't realize Saskatchewan has a different flag for the French community in this province.

We have a slower, more peaceful pace of life in our province and that's the main reason I love it here.

If you didn’t grow up in Saskatchewan you won’t understand it or appreciate it. It’s not a place you go for fun or excitement or great history. Saskatchewan gets cold in the winter, hot in the summer, and is dry and windy. There are a lot of wheat farms in Saskatchewan. There is oil, potash (look it up), and Uranium up north. Kids play hockey, baseball, and football. It’s not an exciting place so you have to come up with your own gun. There are lakes in Saskatchewan and going to the lake in the summer are memorable times. Hunting, ice fishing, outdoor hockey, curling, drinking beer (not that this is unique), and a fairly conservative place. People are simple and humble for the most part.
You always know someone who is not from Saskatchewan by the way they pronounce the word. Lots of people get out of Saskatchewan when they graduate from high school. Yeah it’s boring but so is every other place if you don’t have friends or family that you like to be with and that is something Saskatchewan offers. You have to read between the lines if you want to find out what is interesting about Saskatchewan. If it’s not interesting enough than get rid of it. Make it part of Alberta. It’s not like Manitoba is a bastion of culture and excitement.

I actually found your video on Saskatchewan rather insulting... you based the entire province on a 15 min tour of Regina. A comparison would me to base British Columbia on the granville area of Vancouver, basically stating that the province is full of strung out drug addicts.
There is much more to this province, examples are, 1) why are the RCMP located in Regina, 2) ever hear of the snowbirds, 3) the tunnels of Moose Jaw, 4) the dead sea of Canada, 5) Saskatoon"s Light Energy Project, I could go on and on.... there is a rich history to Saskatchewan, its only flat in that area, the central and northern part of Saskatchewan have rolling hills and rivers and lakes, over 10, 000 to be more accurate, a sportsman"s paradise. and at one time the Capital of Western Canada was not Victoria, it was Battleford Saskatchewan. Can I suggest that you do a little research before insulting a region.... BTW, I was born and raised in Alberta and had that additude of Saskatchewan before I actually explored Saskatchewan

I guarantee they're not trying to make money off of Humboldt. My guess is the money would go to their charity fund

As a resident of the USA, I’m glad you’re doing this series. They don’t teach us much about you guys in school, except maybe the names of most of the provinces. I’m looking forward to a video on Many Tubas soon!!

7:00 That is the church at the RCMP Depot (training grounds). Only know this since my parents (both Mounties at the time) were married there.
