It was wonderful. Melodramatic and as intended, not to be taken seriously (I mean, vastly overweight middle aged men in good satin singing ‘my heart trembles’. A woman taking the veil when she couldn’t have her loved one ). It was fun and they loved performing. No sex of course. Courtly love. Something of Matt Bourne’s Swan Lake about the production and the costumes were fantastic as they should be. Nothing predictable, it was all surprise. The head at the end!
Loved the tattoos and slithery devils stole the show. We know the music so need entertainment.

I have just come back from watching Il Trovatore at a VUE cinema in North Finchley. We lost the picture for several minutes
in the first act. I don't know if this was general. I would give the performance four stars. In particular Jamie Barton was terrific as Azucena. I expect if Verdi had seen her great performance . He may well of reverted to his original thoughts of calling
the opera " The Gypsy." All of the rest of the cast were good . Il Trovatore is classified as one of the three Verdi middle period
masterpieces. It is not, . It is the best opera from his early style. If you like the successor to Ernani. And it is possibly the
finest example of an opera getting better and better from the beginning to the end. To the point that however daft the story is.
By the end you believe what is happening. And are full of empathy for Azucena. As for the sets. Although I am a traditionalist,
The somewhat strange sets were not off putting so far as I was concerned. And this new production didn't need the
four best singers in the world to make it a great success. Mind you the genius of Verdi and Anthony Pappano helped.
