Verdi’s 'Anvil Chorus' from Il trovatore (The Royal Opera)

Even for those who have never set foot in an opera house, Verdi's 'Anvil Chorus' is likely to be a familiar tune. Its rousing melody and rhythmic percussion - including, frequently, anvils played on stage - makes it something of an archetype for a bold, cheery Italian chorus.

A bold adaptation for modern audiences. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. This one was on point. Bravo!

You do realize Giuseppi Verde is sitting up in heaven, looking down on this production, and going "most excellent!" The production designers had SUCH fun with this one...an old caravan, a broken down car, John Waters' Divine, a weightlifter and a guy in a bear suit...can't beat it!

I’m seeing this in a few months - am gutted to learn this isn’t being revived as the staging for the opera was stunning

Vedi!
Le fosche notturne spoglie,
De' cieli sveste l'immensa volta;
Sembra una vedova che alfin si toglie
I bruni panni ond'era involta.
All'opra!
All'opra!
Oh guarda, guarda!
Del sole un raggio
Brilla più vivido nel mio bicchiere.
All'opra!
All'opra!
Chi del gitano i giorni abbella?
Chi del gitano i giorni abbella?
Chi, chi, chi dàgli, martella...
Chi del gitano i giorni abbella?
La zingarella

My parents bought me up listening to Opera and classical music and this is one of my favourite operas. I use to sit with my late Dad listening to this and I use to sing along with it not really knowing what they were singing I was only 7or 8 yrs old. I loved the anvil it was so loud and strong. I have bought my son up with music but I am not sure if he really shares my love of opera and classical music. As my Dad use to say to me this music will live forever. And if he was still alive he'd be watching this with me... Thank you for bringing back happy memories for me. Happy 2022 may you all be safe...

If I close my eyes and listen, I can see my 2 dogs as they play. One is 25 lbs, other is 5 lbs. I wish I could put this 🎶 to my shots of them.

It is so hard to get a good production of classic opera these days.

M G ...creí que era Pagliaci...la verdad una puesta ya demasiado compleja para la complejidad que es el libreto de Trovatore.

The production looks like a Fellini staging of a Sam Shepard play.
