In this video, I share a great super glue accelerator hack that results in a really fast drying time. Does 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol accelerate the drying time of super glue on wood? Let's find out in this short video.

I was 45, but in watching this video I have been reborn with new knowledge. My humble thanks for today’s lesson sir.

My guess is rubbing alcohol has 30% water in it which helps cure the CA glue quickly. But straight isopropyl alcohol is a solvent that will weaken the bond, somewhat slowly, until the alcohol dries. Leaving a weaker bond.

Try using straight water. But I think I will stick with CA activator.

cyanoacrylates set due to moisture content or hydroxy content of a surface, An alcohol will activate the cyanoacrylate cure even if no water in it, when cured with added water or alcohol or baking soda the bond becomes susceptable to post cure hydrolysis as in it breaks down faster than it should reducing the bond polymer properties with age, this is why most commercial activators are dry solvents with a tiny bit of one of many curing agents not a bit of water

Try dusting a little baking soda on the other surface. Instant set! And it can be used as a filler, too.

WARNING! Doing this make the bond WEAKER!

Products like "Hot stuff" glues also can come with a spray activator that will cause the glue to get warm enough to smoke, it cures so fast. Good thing they sell solvents, too...

I've always thought it wouldn't bond wood surfaces because of wood being pourous. I had no idea it was because it was due to the surfaces being dry.
Thanks!

I use water with a little baking soda mixed in it in a spray bottle. Sets up right now.

Worked in a materials lab for a time back in the early 90's, I used to breath on one of the sufaces to be adhered. Always produced the best results...

I always suspected that you don’t need to buy expensive CA glue accelerator. Thank you. 👍

I like the alcohol trick. I usually take a shot of vodka before I glue it up. By the time I wake up, its all bonded.

It's true. There's a YouTuber that shows trim work. And he uses that method. Very very strong. Great video

i just tried this with hand sanitiser (75% alcohol) and it worked! Had been unable to glue this model beforehand - great tip!

Warning, rubbing alcohol can have oil in it to reduce drying of the skin. I would verify in the ingredients as oil will mess up the bond.

Why not just use water? Most isopropyl alcohols range from 1-30% water, which is what is reacting with the adhesive.

We dont have super glue accelerator sprays here where i live. Thanks for the tip to use Isopropyl Alcohol as an alternative. Now i won't have problems with using super glue on my projects. :)

@Hacks by Dad I have wiped one surface with a damp sponge and had fair results. 70% isopropyl seems to work fairly good as an accelerator. I found out by wiping surfaces clean, then applying CA. I noticed it set faster than normal. Have not bought CA accelerator since. Please let us know about your findings. Am interested in results. By the way, baking soda is a good filler but sucks as a bonding agent. Poor adhesion. Much cheaper than micro balloons. (Tell John Scott)!
