Awesome videos love the knowledge you have on water! been watching for a while and have bought a few rolls now. So when you start your French drain- start it as high as possible let’s say 8” underground correct? Then from there it can be level and still drain towards the end no matter how long the pipe because it had the slope in only the first few feet?!

Or is it

a different scenario with a downspout: you want to bury the not quit a 90/solid pipe as high as possible to start but you have to slope the pipe 1” every 10 feet so by the time your 100’ away your 12-18 or more underground.

When do you know to keep the pipe level or keep the slope on it? I’m always trying to keep the slope on the pipe and then I’m so deep that I think the extension up to a pop up won’t work?

I start my french drains just below sod root level. Water travels downhill, water seeks its lowest level. Given that, I have removed a mile of old solid plastic drain pipe which snaked around like a roller coaster and was full of silt... There is more to proper drainage than just digging a trench. If you sock the preforated pipe, a weed barrier layer is not required, as I have dug up my own install two years hence and found the skreed to be in pristine condition near the pipe. My installs most always come off downspouts, so the french drain must be engineered to move a lot of water in a short time.

How deep do you need to get to make sure you are under a concrete sidewalk that is yet to be poured?

I dug down about 12" and started seeing water... wouldn't I want the french drain trench to be about that deep to start, so I get that water?
