Today were looking at one of Japans finest pencils, the Holbein Artists Colored Pencils!

Known for there unique exotic core mix's and the thick vividly saturated color they put down, i've been wanting to try these pencils out for quite a while now.
They are certainly not the easiest pencil to get hold of outside of japan so i'm very excited for todays episode.
Are they as good as people say? Are these the best Japanese Coloured Pencils? Are they the WORLDS best Colored Pencils?
This is the Big Review where I take pencils (and art supplies) and throw a series of tests at them. Some scientific, some opinion based, but through out it all I'm trying to give you enough information that you can make your own mind. This is the Big Review!

Hello everyone! Thankyou for looking at my video 😊. Please note, I am not monetised on YouTube! So all these adds (I’m shocked by how many) are placed on here by YouTube itself. Again I’m so sorry about them and wish there was someway I could limit them. Seriously YouTube you don’t need to run so many!

This is a brilliant demonstration of saturation! I’ve never seen anyone add ‘pressure’ using scales like this, it works so well!

If you do ever try/test out the Holbein Pastels, I'd highly recommend getting the Soft White pencil as well. It's not part of the set, it's a separate pencil, but it is a very unique white - and yes, make sure it is the _Soft White_ as there are two whites from Holbein

Haha what timing! I am literally waiting for my set of Holbein pencils to arrive in the mail TODAY!😹

BTW I LOVED the previous Polychromos review, looking forward to all the reviews in this series (and other videos especially art pieces)! 😺

Great review Sunny! I’m learning a lot more about different types of pencils ✏️ Also I wonder who inspired you to do these puns 😂

These are useful reviews, and I hope you are enjoying your Holbein pencils. A shame you didn't get to experience the amazing Holbein Soft White pencil - it is really special!. And, FYI - Holbein is pronounced like Hole-bine (rhymes with vine), not Hole-be-in.

I'm kinda invested in this series now. Will you test Derwent too? Curious to know!

Japan is known for making what shouldn't work – work.
This is what I would expect from an art supply trying to meet expectations, as apposed to creating a pencil where the colors behave to there respective nature.
It's fighting the natural properties of color, to create a consistency across the board.
I was surprised at the blending test working so well, having to compensate for the other factors.
Not surprised by the pressure and gradation tests dropping off suddenly.
Not surprised with the strength test.
I'm guessing its the use of the binder as a duel purpose for strength and color consistency, as they break slightly easier.
As you said there is a lot in the attraction factor, something you use and learn to compensate for their flaws.
I would consider getting them as a support color for use with other colored pencils for the boldness factor.
It's seems like I could make a comparison of the Faber Castell with the Holbein, with my use of
Crayola Crayons and Cra-Z-Art Crayons..
Faber Castle and Crayola for blending and shading, Holbein Ca-Z-Art. for solid layering.
From what I could tell from your review, I'll go along with your rating as A minus.

I think for vibrancy you should do number of layers instead of weights of pressure. The more layers a pencil will allow on the paper the better

Ooooh they have a white undercoat, a hallmark of budget pencils because the wood quality might not be sufficient to to prevent the lead colour from seeping through. So they use a white coating to prevent this happening.

Do you also test store brands? I would love to see how these compare and contrast with Blick Studio Colored Pencils

They look very much like the Mitsubishi pencils.

Rest your arm on a raised wooden rod while doing the grams color test, I've seen watercolor artists use them so their arm won't hover or touch the paint
