This is like the Canadian jam not. – – – – – I so enjoy your humor I live amongst some of the most pristine blue ribbon streams in the Rocky Mountains, Idaho and Wyoming, and I don’t even fly fish. However, I really love the ice fish. While in the military I spent 14 months in Alaska – – I could walk to the cove and catch dolly Varden trout that went up to and slightly over 36 inches. These fish ran to the ocean and returned these fish I did catch wile fly fishing! Inn Keeper more ALE!

I've always just tied a uni knot for my backing. Honestly, a knot probably isn't even necessary. I'm digging my heels in way before I get this far.
BTW, one of my fishing buddies just gave me a 'I suck at fly fishing' sticker' that immediately went up on the inside of my hatch. I still laugh every time I see it which is every time I open my hatch to gear up. Thanks for the great vibes.

A version that makes full use of the strength of the backing is to tie a bimini in the end of the backing with large enough loop. Then tie the arbor knot with the doubled line of the loop of the bimini.

Man...amen to the last thing you said. Some guys never get beyond the paralyzing fear some guide put in them whilst they were making an offering on a well BEATEN stretch of creek with clear water...There are times an ugly knot can bedevil your success, from tangles to rejects...I get it. But here is the thing...if you are standing in a boil as the sun sets...I promise the knot anywhere in the rig is probably not gonna wound ya...tie it on, whatever it is, and heave that shit out there and take the pay day....lmao.

Just tied one the other day. Forgot how so I got a book out. You should do one on different backing to fly line connections. Loops and lashing knots. Nail knots or long loop, 25 turn Bimini with a doubled double figure 8 for extra cushion and cutting resistance…. Just sayin’. Stay huge!

I just inherited some gear from an uncle that passed. he had a spool of spare backing in his fly vest. wish I could've known what he was getting up to. 😂

Suggestion: make sure you tie the arbor knot with the tag end from the correct side (overwound vs underwound). It will slip rotating one way but not the other.

OK with the way reels are milled down to almost nothing I recently just tied the backing thru a gap in the arbor. Yeah if a fish gets you down to that the games already been over for a bit.
