It's the same with thrusting with a saber- people tend to exaggerate "optimized for this purpose" as "can only do this."

Love how that rapier just goes through the dummy like it's butter

My HEMA instructor put it this way: "rapiers are bad at cutting.... for a sword. That's like saying pistols are bad at shooting, for a gun. A pistol can obviously shoot. You're gonna have better accuracy with a rifle, and can shoot longer range targets, but a pistol can still shoot. A rapier can cut flesh quite well; it's still a sword"

I'm a sports professional and had to make an article about fencing... rapiers started being widely used with the "Italian Schools" and can cut and have always been supposed to, but their greatest usage is stabbing. Their light weight against the "German School's" two handed swords gave them a huge advantage.

Fun fact: My uncle ryan competed on forged in fire and won.

Edit: I don’t know the exact episode, my family and I watched the episode during it’s first airing on tv, and as I recall it was fairly recent, if that helps.

Is mind boggling to me how some people think that some swords can't cut like a rapier or that some swords can't stab like katanas. There are motherfucking swords. Every sword, no matter shape or form they will cut and stab one way or another. They won't cut or stab as good as other swords design for that but they will do the job.

This is my master blacksmith I am learning under. In my opinion one of the best forged in fire episodes and one of the best made swords

A rapier is still a bladed weapon, so it makes sense to be able to cut as well as stab, right? Aren’t they also double-sided, so you can swing with either direction? Or is one side more blunt than the other?

That's insane how smoothly the blade glides through the dummy. Definitely a quality sword

This is why, other than the Claymore, the Estoc and Rapier are my favorite swords. Versatility, along with dexterity and strength needed, all swords seem to follow this pattern, being versatile side-arms when you don't have a polearm or axe at your side. Be they Katana, Longsword, Claymore, hell, even the Zweihandr, while many see it as a heavy weapon that requires strength, is a 6 pound weapon that is surprisingly quick for a weapon that has one of its purposes being to take off a horse' head and disable Knights from their mobility (Knights in armor are very quick, but not as quick as they are on horseback)

Rapiers are the perfect example of agility vs strength; however, you would have to be very fast because one swing from a claymore and you would meet the Devine rapier.

Can you talk about batarangs working kind of like boomerangs cuz they dont seem very technically designed

The only true weakness of a rapier I've found is that it's not so good at blocking/parrying more heavy blades, as heavier blades have more inertia and are more likely to just not be affected by your efforts to control them.

Forged in fire is such a great show. All the different weapons they have to make is mind blowing

Can you rate the historical accuracy of the weapons in for honor if you haven't done that already

I used to watch the show with my brother when I was like 7-9 years old

Had to use this clip today to inform my friend who stubbornly thought Rapiers and Fencing Foils were the same thing. Thanks for helping me break that confusing.
