Rapier classification is one of those things you don't think, you just feel

The term rapier refers to every single sword which is carried alongside your regular clothes. The word itself comes from the Spanish "ropera" which has the same meaning as explained above so it can encompass swords from the 16th up to the 19th century as carrying a sword was a normal occurance.

Maybe the real rapier was the friends we made along the way

In Spanish, it is clearer: Rapier sword, espada ropera. "Clothing sword". It meant the sword that you would carry around on the sttreet with your normal clothes. Then it makes sense that there is a huge variety under the same category.

Historically, people didn't classify swords nearly as specifically as we do today. A sword that we call a "side sword" could have been called a rapier back when it was made, and a "long sword" was just a description, not a class of weapon.

As an amateur I would say a rapier is one-handed thrust centric complex hand protection versatile longish in the blade and capable of superior defense

The 3 Musketeers were misnamed. They hardly used muskets but were renowned for their swordsmanship. They should have been called The 3 Rapierest.

Then, you have to make a distinction between what would _historically_ be known as a rapier, and what we define rapier as today.

Rapier wasn't so deadly. Deadly was a rapier in hands of a spaniard doing "Destreza verdadera", best swordsmans all time.

This is another amazing video! Rapiers are such cool blades but I was wondering, what situations would you want a rapier over another sword?

Swords in general way back when in Europe really didn’t have set names all the time. So really what would happen is that a blade smith probably was given a description, depiction, dimensions, and weight of the blade and they made it. Unless you were a soldier in the army of whatever lord you most likely were either getting a premade sword or custom made sword. If you were of nobility it most definitely was tailored to you.

Point I’m making is that a good chunk of classifications and specific sword names weren’t established till way later. Which is why many swords fall under the name such as Rapier despite each example being vastly different. Blades with historical names I believe are knives, daggers, Great Swords or two handed swords, long swords, War Knife, Great Knife, Short Sword and some others. (Great Knife and War knife are English translations I know)

Can anyone suggest a nice, battle-ready rapier?

You're the guy who got stuffed in a locker once and said "never again". it's what started your anime protagonist training arc. No bully can cross you without crossing your blade(s).
Honestly though, I'm really inspired by your passion and dedication to swords and their history/martial arts. It makes me want to get up and practice/study.
