He said, "there isn't a lot of good tutorials out there" . True...and this is another one. Too much hesitation, no preparation and lots of em's um's and ah's as he tried to remember how to do the tut himself ! 
 Also he chose an image that was easy to cut out. If only real life was like that. Often these cutouts come from over or under exposed images and subjects obscured . Even with the lack of preparation, had the tutor chosen such an example he would have earned a lot more respect and heck of a lot more thumbs up.

I use magnetic lasso tool to select the image since it's faster. I like what you did with layer mask to quickly remove the background that was good tip. Good video overall.

why when I copy and paste the cut out image I just did with pen tool, and it only paste an empty layer onto the new background picture I chose?
