========= To Hell And Back LYRICS ==========

A short man from Texas
A man of the wild
Thrown into combat
Where bodies lie piled

Hides his emotions
His blood’s running cold
Just like his victories,
His story unfolds

Bright
A white light
If there’d be
Any glory in war

Let it rest
On men like him

Dead men will never come back

Crosses grow on Anzio
Where no soldiers sleep
And where hell’s six feet deep
That death does wait
There’s no debate
So charge and attack
Going to Hell and Back

A man of the 15th
A man of Can Do
Friends fall around him
And yet he came through

Let them fall face down
If they must die
Making it easier
To say goodbye

Bright
A white light
If there’d be,
Any glory in war

Let it rest
On men like him

Who went to Hell and came back

Crosses grow on Anzio
Where no soldiers sleep
And where hell is six feet deep
That death does wait
There’s no debate
So charge and attack
Going to Hell and Back

Oh gather round me
And listen while I speak
Of a war
Where Hell is six feet deep

And all along the shore
Where cannons still roar
They’re haunting my dreams
They’re still there when I sleep

Crosses grow on Anzio
Where no soldiers sleep
and where hell is six feet deep
That death does wait
There’s no debate
So charge and attack
Going to Hell and Back

========= Historic Fact ==========

Audie Murphy was one of the most decorated US soldiers of World War II. He gained quite the reputation during his service and was regarded as a brave and daring soldier. Following his service and a battle with PTSD which resulted in a prescription drug addiction, he went on to become a Hollywood star.

I just discovered that some of the lyrics of the song are quotes from Poems that Audie Murphy wrote. Sabaton always amazes me with its attention to detail and love for history.

This is the first Sabaton's song I've heard. I fell in love instantly.

Thank you guys for talking about PTSD, this illness kills and destroy too many veterans and soldiers around the world, but it seems that most of the time Governments don't care about it.

The brillant thing about this song is that Sabaton didn't need to sing about him this way:

Audie Murphy near singlehandedly held off 6 German panzers and hundreds of German troops, with nothing but a heavy machine gun and limited artillery support. They could have easily written about his feats in battle but they chose to sing about his PTSD and how he dealt with it.

This very song is proof that Sabaton doesn't glorify war, but honours the men who fight them. Real respect right here.

I love this song and Audie Murphys bravery speaking out about PTSD. I run 100 mile ultras in memory of my son PFC James Dexter Morris and for veteran suicide awareness and Sabaton music fills the majority of my long hours on a course. 💕💙

I read an article from 2013. The Murphy family was worried that future generations would forget the deeds of Audie Murphy. 2014 a metal band not from USA but from Sweden put him back into the light with this song. And if people are like me and listen to these songs get a huge urge to read more about these songs our heroes will never be forgotten. Tears of gratitude fill my eyes as I write this. Tack så mycket. See you guys next month. You guys are all heart.

This song was written about a soldier by the name of Audie Murphy. The most decorated soldier of WWII. He was from the state of Texas. After the war he became an actor. He was deemed too short and was denied service more than once. But man what a warrior.

God it’s insane to think that sabaton included lines from Audie’s poetry in this song….it just hits harder even when you find out he suffered from extreme ptsd….

Respect to Audie Murphy, I love the whistle at the start and end, crazy that he was the most decorated soldier from WW2, also PTSD is very real so seeing kids on Tiktok saying that they have PTSD because they tripped over a seashell at the beach once really annoys me, because my great grandfather (who died in like 2016) served in WW2, not on in D-Day or Dragoon but he served in WW2 and that's what matters.

I can't believe this isn't one of Sabaton's most popular songs, it's so good.

That whistle on its own is so innocuous and almost inspiring, but when its combined with the guitar and especially the visuals form the original music video its so haunting.... This song does an amazing job of dealing with PTSD and 1:46 has to be one of my favorite parts, it also serves as a reminder that we sometimes place too much emphasis on those who die and not those who came back and dealt with a fate that was worse then

One thing I like best about this is they actually use one of Audie Murphy's poems - "The Crosses Grow on Anzio".

The Crosses Grow on Anzio
Audie Murphy

Oh, gather 'round me, comrades
And listen while I weep;
Of a war, a war, a war...
where hell is six feet deep.

Along the shore, the cannons roar.
Oh how can a soldier sleep?
The going's slow on Anzio
And hell is six feet deep.

Praise be to God for this captured sod
That's rich where blood does seep;
With yours and mine, like butchered swine;
And hell is six feet deep.

That death does wait
There's no debate;
No triumph will we reap
The crosses grow on Anzio,
Where hell is six feet deep.

My great grandfather fought in ww2 in the army, Stormed the beaches of Normandy and fought in the battle of the bulge in the freezing conditions and he was one of two men in a group that survived after another soldier accidentally dropped a landmine that they were loading into a truck which caused it to go off and the blast knocked my great grandfather and his friend back against an old wooden house and knocked him unconscious and was sent to a hospital off the front where he was treated for his wounds. He returned home with shrapnel still in his body. He lived to be 101 years old.

He received the Purple Heart
