I think my favorite thing about this movie was that they also avoided the trope of the self-hating gay who doesn’t want to admit his own sexuality. Simon knows he’s gay and he never questions that fact and his worry about coming out is not because he can’t admit to himself what he knows to be true, it’s because, as he says in the film, sharing who you are with the world is scary no matter what. This was a great film based off of a great book.

Usually coming of age movies are guilty pleasures but it seems like studios have been coming out with more gems lately.

Nick Robinson killed it as Simon. He is my favourite actor ever

A real teenage story for me would be a character in his room every night with no social life

when I watched Love Simon and the part with the shit head Martin scene happened everyone yelled in the theater

This is the first teenage movie that represented teenagers the way they actually are. I mean they referenced Panic at the Disco and Hamilton for crying out loud. However a lot of that is owed to the book. In the book for Halloween simon dresses as a dementor and Leah dresses as a character from fruits basket.

the most realistic thing about this movie is his obsession over panic at the disco. and brendon urie. even if it was a short clip i approve.

Great analysis. I never got the feeling that Simon's dad had an issue with Simon being gay though. What I took from dad's reaction is guilt that for all those years of cracking 'harmless' gay jokes in front of his gay child and how insensitive he must have come across to his son. And feeling like his son must hate him for that.

I decided to rent this maybe a month ago, and I’m 100% in agreement. It’s such a lovely story, and I’m really glad it’s a thing.

This is very perceptive look back at the movie, and I agree with everything you say. Even to this very much older gay man, this movie got so much right about what it’s like to be gay and in the closet in high school, in ways that are true now and were true when I was a teenager. And yes, I think you don’t have to be gay to get this film, since everybody feels like they are different and misunderstood when they’re that age.

Roby, thanks for such a personal and perceptive review of ''Love, Simon'' and acknowledging how a gay teen movie can be so universal and appealing to most everyone. Of the many, many critiques I've seen, you've done the rare thing of saluting the deft director (Greg Berlanti) and the stellar screenwriters (Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker). Bravo! But since you're doling out the credit, let's also applaud Becky Albertalli, who wrote the book that the film is based on: ''Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda.'' Without her story, there is no movie. And credit, too, all the amazing actors who lovingly brought Albertalli's characters to life, most notably Nick Robinson in the title role. He's a giant reason why we all love ''Simon.''

god, yes. i vividly remember consistently sob-crying for legitimately half the length of the movie, and when I left the theatre. it wasn't sadness, it was just a mix of emotions that got me so overwhelmed that I just cried. for 45 minutes. as an lgbt teenager, this movie got to me for so many reasons (many personal, some general). compared to other lgbt movies, this one holds so much realism, as you said, and the way things were handled came across as human and I could really believe the characters were real people.
and oh my GOD, the ferris wheel scene? the ENTIRE THEATRE was cheering and clapping (I was doing the same, but sobbing at the same time. it was the most overwhelmed I'd been in a while and it was in the best way possible!!) and I heard the manliest voices yelling "HELL YEAH!!". it's literally the only time ive ever clapped in a movie theatre lol. it was so surreal to me. to see so much support and representation on the big screen. in public. that's also what made me cry for 20 minutes after the movie ended, lmao.
ive rewatched it once, and although I started noticing flaws, that will never tarnish what I experienced that night.
just the pure emotion and memory of watching that movie for the first time, surrounded by so many supportive people, I don't think I'll ever forget it. I honestly think watching love, simon made me a slightly different person in the best way possible. it inspired me to come out to my friend, who ended up coming out to me in return.
and I remember ordering the book one day after seeing the movie, and once it arrived, I read the book in two days. the fastest I've ever read a book. it's not an exaggeration to say that this may be one of my favourite movies (and books) for a while.

A beautiful and funny movie that tells its story with absolute truth and enough humor so that while we feel the emotions, we don't feel sad.

about everyone in the theater was crying when simon got outed because the panic and just anxiety in that scene was transmitted to the audience so well but at the end me and my friend walked out both smiling through the tears
