I can't think of many other cinematic villains that straight up won and beat the heroes and ruled for a good 20 or so years.

One of the things that make Palps so iconic is that he straight up won. Generations of planning among the sith went off without a hitch and he took over the galaxy and make the Chosen one who was prophesied to destroy him his servant.

Palpatine is criminally underrated, especially considering there are people in our reality who share commonalities with him.

I like to think that bringing balance to the Force meant killing Palpatine. The guy is evil incarnate, a literal devil who brought war, death and destruction on a galactic scale in ways that make other Sith and their exploits look tame.

What also makes him truly evil is the fact that Palpatine was born a psychopath, he had no traumatic events whatsoever that made him the way he is, he was born like this (if you read the Darth Plagueis' novel you'll know what i'm talking about). That alone is enough to make him one of the most evil character in movie history.

Adding onto that, he manipulated the hero into becoming his servant, turning him into the very thing he swore to destroy, until he was merely remnants of a man held together by rage, pain, and machinery. Also, Palpatine formed various alliances ranging from his own apprentices, to politicians, to the leaders of mega corporations, but (to my knowledge) none of them ultimately received any benefit from helping him out, as they eventually turned out betrayed.

i think what makes him so great and so evil is he has literally no other plan than to have ultimate power for himself. Not for the greater good, not because he thinks life for everyone would be better under his reign. He doesn’t care how miserable everyone else is as long as he’s in power
