How to knit a newborn baby hat for beginners with straight needles

Thanks so much!! I made notes while watching and thought they might be useful for others:

1. Cast on 60 loose stitches.

2. Using 2 knit 2 purl, knit 12 rows. If you're using one colour now knit 24 more rows. If you're using 2 colours swap colours here, knit 4, then swap colours and knit 2. Continue with 4 and 2 pattern for 4 of each stripe above the initial 12 rows. (The video shows you how to bring the wool up with each colour).

3. Decrease the stitches by half for 2 rows, with the first row as 30 stitches and the second as 15 stitches.

4. Cut the wool long (for 2 passes through the top and enough to sew the hat length) then thread it through a tapestry needle. Leave the stitches on your knitting needle.

5. Pass the threaded needle through all the stitches and pull the wool through. Go back to the starting side and repeat, pulling the wool through again.

6. Use the threaded needle to sew up the sides of the hat. Sew 2 rows on one side, then the matching 2 on the other and repeat to the bottom.

7. Fold up the 12 stitches of the bottom to make the hat the right height.

8. Sew on a small, light pom pom (optional).

Also does this cast on technique HAVE to be done for a hat??
