Arthur Schopenhauer quotes on God

Arthur Schopenhauer ( 22 February 1788 – 21 September 1860) was a German philosopher. He is best known for his 1818 work The World as Will and Representation, which characterizes the phenomenal world as the product of a blind noumenal will. Building on the transcendental idealism of Immanuel Kant, Schopenhauer developed an atheistic metaphysical and ethical system that rejected the contemporaneous ideas of German idealism. He was among the first thinkers in Western philosophy to share and affirm significant tenets of Indian philosophy, such as asceticism, denial of the self, and the notion of the world as appearance. His work has been described as an exemplary manifestation of philosophical pessimism.
“God, who in the beginning was the creator, appears in the end as revenger and rewarder. Deference to such a God admittedly can produce virtuous actions; however, because fear of punishment or hope for reward is their motive, these actions will not be purely moral; on the contrary, the inner essence of such virtue will amount to prudent and carefully calculating egoism.”

“If God made this world, then I would not want to be the God. It is full of misery and distress that it breaks my heart.”
"That a god-like Jehovah should have created this world of misery and woe, out of pure caprice, and because he enjoyed doing it, and should then have clapped his hands in praise of his own work, and declared everything to be very good-that will not do at all!"
The opinion is like a pendulum and obeys the same law.
A man can do what he wants, but not want what he wants.
Religion is the metaphysics of the masses.
The bad thing about all religions is that, instead of being able to confess their allegorical nature, they have to conceal it.

This is awesome and surreal! I read Schopenhauer regularly and this adds another level. I hope ai gets better and better and his entire works can be a realistic video lecture series 😄

I doubt that Schopenhauer could actually speak such good English.

God created EVERYTHING! Misery, Hell, death, disease. And a lot of other fun stuff. And he loves us. 😊

In all his travels he blames God for man's misery summing it up to religion. He doesn't blame corruption, greed, etc. as a product of mankind's misery.

He fails to recognise belief in God as distinguished from the punishment and reward of God and he fails to recognise a person could choose to worship God sincerely due to their belief in God regardless of the punishment and reward simply because God’s way is best

Recently, I wondered why anyone talks about God. Maybe it takes courage to find out why God comes into my thoughts.

While Schop was very much against the idea of a personal God, he wasn't completely dismissive of religion. He was a bit more nuanced than this video might imply.

"The myth of the Fall of man is the only thing in the Old Testament to which I can concede a metaphysical, although only allegorical, truth: indeed it is this alone that reconciles me to the Old Testament. Thus our existence resembles nothing but the consequence of a false step and a guilty desire. New Testament Christianity, the ethical spirit of which is that of Brahmanism and Buddhism, and which is therefore very foreign to the otherwise optimistic spirit of the Old Testament, has also, extremely wisely, started from that very myth …

The innermost kernel and spirit of Christianity is identical with that of Brahmanism and Buddhism.

The spirit and ethical tendency, however, are the essentials of a religion, not the myths in which it clothes them.

Therefore, I do not abandon the belief that the teachings of Christianity are to be derived in some way from those first and original religions [i.e., Brahmanism and Buddhism]. … But in virtue of this origin, Christianity belongs to the ancient, true, and sublime faith of mankind. This faith stands in contrast to the false, shallow, and pernicious optimism that manifests itself in Greek paganism, Judaism, and Islam."

(As a perennialist, I don't think he gave these latter traditions a fair shake, but whatever.)

We know that
(*) GOD is Absolute.
ーーーーーーーーーー
<Truth>
GOD alone Is.
Nobody, Nothing.
ーーーーーーーーーー
<Proof>
If there is something
which is not GOD,
then GOD must be relative.
Due to (*)
this is a contradiction.
Therefore
nobody and nothing
except GOD.
<End of Proof>
(Remark: The above shows
Panentheism.)
(Remark: Thus this world is
entirely an illusion.)

Let’s say that god was a real thing even tho it isn’t and it has a son named Jesus. If you can think of just one single solidarity thing that could be changed on this planet to make things better, god would be a failure. Why? Because if gif is all powerful and all loving it should be perfect. If you can point to something that it has done and can say if you change this thing, your design would be better. Then it must not be as perfect as you think it is. Example if I created a universe with a planet with intelligent life on it suffering and death wouldn’t exist. Somehow about inst this god that you believe in didn’t have that result. How about instead of sending your son or cousin to fix things you don’t let them get messed up in the first place. Furthermore if this work of fiction was to be taken as truth, would not god be guilty and not humans because none of us was here to see Adam or Eve mess up. Correct me if I’m wrong but that happened on his watch.
