Recently happened to me. A higher up was inputting lunches that I wasn't taking, without informing or asking me at all. Yeah, I knew it was illegal, but I wanted to at least give them a chance to resolve the situation internally. Luckily (for them) my direct manager, payroll, and HR were all shocked and immediately supportive, and helped get back my time. I've informed my co-workers to check their own timecards, plus they have a new rule about who can edit punches :)

My manager immediately suggested emailing payroll but I would have made sure it was all in writing anyway; I was on the lookout for any red flags during the whole process, in part thanks to Ryan and this channel!

Going to out a previous employer: Tommy Bahama's distribution center was notorious for this. If you were 1 minute late, they docked 15 minutes off.

And docking pay as a disciplinary action is also illegal.

My old manager used to put my overtime hours on my next check. Being young and dumb is great

My first job ever at subway did this, the store closed at 10 and we often stay a hour over closing cleaning and put away food, but the store owner would say you should of been done by 10 so you don’t get paid, and would take away our extra hour worked, we made 8.75, on top of that they would tell us to put half the amount of meat on subs that your supposed to. I didn’t follow that rule ever, the owners eventually got in trouble with subway for there tricks and the store got shut down

This happened to me for a time, and they mad it obvious. One particular supervisor would literally clock me out while I was working. I would go to clock out at the end of the day only to find I wasn't even on the clock.

He claimed it was to make it look like labor wasn't high and said he would fix it later. So I started saving all all my little time slips.

Eventually he was written up and they had to give me about $300 in back pay to resolve the issue.

I've been keeping my tike slips ever since. Not only does it protect me from that type of activity, but I can have some idea as to how much my check is going to be for each pay period as my hours fluctuate.

Would be interesting to hear you speak on how California makes a whole bunch of labor laws them exempts local and state employees from all of these protections.

Here i go again.
If the previous manager i had made errors on payroll hours, i would understand.
After all, this is the manager who i asked if she had questions for me, she said i should email her those questions.

Pretty sure a major grocery store stole a bunch if hours on the pretense of not having permission to stay late even though I was a closer and staying until it was done was in the job description.

Sadly that was a dozen years ago.

It happened to me. I found out that my supervisor & her friend in payroll were taking 30 minutes for lunch or 2-15 minute breaks (6 days a week for 2 months.

I, usually, worked instead of taking 30 minutes of my 1-hour-total-per-day-breaks. They said that "I was late" or" took a longer break" I wasn't. I car-shared with a co-worker. She was on time but I was late? How does that work. We took lunch at the same time in the same place on-site.

I was hourly. We had a physical time clock. They hand wrote changes on the paper cards. I caught them.

I was "let go" 2 weeks later. I couldn't afford a lawyer. Ask to see your time records a couple times per month.

They no longer exist. I'm still here. Just living my own life. 💜

My husband worked for a neighborhood market and everyday as he left and was clocked out the ladies in the front would as him to get the shopping carts so he did. And one day he adjusted his time card to represent those hours lost he just added more time on to his day. But he got fired for making this adjustment. Later the manager bragged that he taught everyone a lesson by firing him.

My supervisor altered my time card to show that I was absent on a day when I did show.

But even if you sue only the company gets consequences and only monetary right? There ahould be personnal criminal consequences for managers doing anything like this. They should go to prison for theft and fraud.

I used to work on a govt project where my manager said he got corp approval to have our secretary do our time cards. She always just put 40 hrs a week. Any extra time I worked he just gave as comp time (I was salary). When I was leaving a timecard auditor called me and said that he needed to ask some simple questions and we would be done in 5 minutes. I gave all the truth in about 20 minutes! It was awesome.

If you work for an NRC licensee it can also start to tread into violations for willful misconduct/recod falsification due to the work hours controls in 10 CFR 26.205

My manager called an employee and told her to change the time because someone got overtime. She denied her and said if I do I’m calling corporate. She hung up on the employee so fast.
