Rocket From The Tombs is:
David Thomas - vocals
Peter Laughner - guitar, vocals, harp on “Gasoline”
Cheetah Chrome - guitar, organ on "So Cold"
John Madansky - drums
Bob Bensick plays alto sax on “Rich Bitch.”
This was the debut of what’s come to be known as the “original” Rocket From The Tombs (actually version 3.1). The event, Special Extermination Music Night, was the first and last time all three of the legendary bands of the mid-70s Cleveland Underground appeared together: The Electric Eels, RFTT, and Mirrors. The cover art is one of three original poster designs by John Morton (The Eelctric Eels) reworked by him for this release.
Craig Bell had been with the band for at least a month but this night he did not appear onstage with them. A member of Mirrors, he was forbidden to play with RFTT by Mirrors’ band leader Jaime Klimek. Soon afterwards he was thrown out of Mirrors for “consorting with the enemy.” That’s the way things were in the Cle Underground back then.
Three of the songs, “Rich Bitch,” Laughner’s “Gasoline” and “New York Stars,” are unique to this release.“Gasoline” features two girls, The Tombers, on backing vocals. They may have been Debbie Smith and Sue Schmidt but this is speculation. Someone is singing backing on “Satisfaction” but no one remembers who.
Kid Leo, a prominent dj on hippie FM station WMMS, was host for the night, lending it a certain “credibility.”
The show was recorded on somebody’s reel-to reel tape deck. Whoever was in charge fiddled with the input controls throughout. At one point in “So Cold” there is a momentary drop-out. All of these flaws have been fixed.
In those years The Viking Saloon on Chester Avenue was the best place to see interesting Cle bands, though not often of the underground variety. David was the bouncer / doorman for awhile.
