Traditionally a product manager is not necessarily a high level position like you’re saying. They prioritize features and make sure dev work gets done in a timely manner to hit objectives.

As someone who works in advertising I can add a little context to the, 'Shouldn't marketing know how to market their product' - conversation.

In short, Yes. But the more detailed response, is no. I don't specialise in service-based products/video-game marketing but I have done work on a few apps.

As marketers we can't determine where the value of a product is held. We can conduct focus groups or some form of quantitative research to infer where/how/why a product should be pushed but as much as we may infer a perceived value in a service, it by no means makes that THE angle we take in promoting the overall product. Kinda like the differences in fishing with a spear when compared to finishing with a net. One's useful for getting a very specific type of fish, the other's useful at bringing in a wider catch.

I can imagine a game's Product Manager would have a wealth of insights and understanding about the actual features and nuances of a game that should inform the way it's communicated to players and potential players. So in that way, it's well within the wheelhouse of a Product Manager to offer perspective/insights to marketing departments on more hands-on elements of a live-service product like a video game.

Just as an architect may need to know how a building is constructed but not necessarily the ratios for concrete. You're effectively looking for people who know just enough to have a solid command of their tasks but not too much as to take-on responsibilities that are outside the realm of their duties.

Jack of all trades, master of none, better than a master of one - type deal. Hope this perspective adds some additional context to the dialogue!

Love the videos Flats!

Ok, but a highly regarded and respected community member as a team member is a genius idea that I’m surprised more games don’t consider. Minecraft is the only one off the top of my head where I know of more than one case of community becoming staff.

I knew guys who worked in Silicon Valley and lived in San Fran to get lower housing prices. This one dude made 90k/y as a test engineer and lived with 9 other people paying rent in a single bedroom apartment.

I could do product manager for OW, i am even playing this game on a competitive level and kinda know what im doing. But i aint moving to Cali for that salary. A product manager with their descriptive needs would earn 120 - 200k. So their high 130k "competitive salary" would be the one of the lowest offers you can get... sad.

72k?! In LA?!! That’s stupid low especially when gas itself is close to $5 a gallon

Well also add into the fact that layoffs (especially in the gaming industry just because its so cutthroat) usually include the idea of employees being there for 5, 10, 20+ years and those employees either wanting better benefits or better pay for their years of service. Solution? Show them all the door and refill the position with younger employees who won't ask for these things 2 weeks into the job.

Blizz devs have publicly told Flats they clipped his suggestions and ideas to the teams in their dev discord.

Nobody wants to save Blizzard for that pay, just to see the people above get better pay.

I think you're misunderstanding the role. A PMs job is to ensure timely feature delivery, and to own the lifecycle of a feature. It's not a game design or decision making role. If you like gannt charts and feature documentation, that's what this is.... The requirements list on this role are pretty standard in the industry and indicative of someone doing the job, and not something you'll have experience in if you haven't done the role before. Normally you'll start off in this role as an associate PM, that's a role that I've seen people move into from other fields like customer success, but it's a communications / production role.

Using some Google-fu:

Irvine is part of Anaheim-Santa Ana-Irvine Metro Div. metro area, which is ranked 5 out of 273 cities across the US in terms of cost of living. According to C2ER (the Council for Community and Economic Research), the cost of living in Irvine is estimated to be 150.3% of the national average making it one of the most expensive cities in the US.

Average Salary in Irvine, CA. $56, 823 is the 25th percentile. Salaries below this are outliers. $99, 802 is the 75th percentile.

Here's the income a single person needs to live comfortably in the 25 U.S. cities with the highest cost of living: New York City: $138, 570. San Jose, California: $136, 739. Irvine, California: $126, 797.

I like how Youtube cut off the title for me before I clicked and all I saw was "So Your Saying I Could Be Overwatch 2's Product..."

Joking aside, it would be hilarious if Blizzard hired Flats. In no world would it make sense as he is incredibly biased and would have to quit streaming. But. Would be funny.

3:35 And that's exactly why you would never the position. Employers won't hire someone they know they won't have power over. That's just plain capitalism.
