Blind person here. The pastor at my church is from India, and he and his wife are amazing. They do not treat me any differently than a sighted person even when they first met me. So I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that the family was probably just lying or had some really big issues they need to work out. Here’s a warning I have had to give regarding my cane and braille tablet, never touch my assistive technology, or I may start swinging in self defense.
as for the mango story, the author wasn’t a jerk for accidentally taking them, but became the jerk when they did not come clean to the rest of the group. It was an honest mistake, which any of us could make, but the right thing to do would’ve been to go to the neighbors, tell them what happened, and offer to either refund their money or go pick up mangoes for them. The reason those other neighbors went into full force detective mode might be because they have a zero tolerance for theft. In my family, it wasn’t about the amount that you’ve stolen, but that you’ve stolen in the first place. Also as someone who is naturally distrustful of people, this would only make it worse for me. I’d be afraid to order my groceries again, thinking that someone would steal them, And that I will be out of money which is very tight for me. I don’t know, it just seems to me like this person watched everything that happened and instead of coming clean, just decided to laugh at people.
