I sometimes go to this well and sit there eating my lunch in winter. It's a very silent and comforting place. I'm glad you are coming here in September. It's a very nice time of the year for a visit!

Springs seem to have been just as important or sacred to the prehistoric people as they were to the later classical cultures. I love visiting springs with legends attached. Great video.

Walled off wells appear throughout the Bronze age cultures, from Spain to Sardinia to ancient Jericho. I think there's a more sinister reason for walling them off, to control the population by controlling the access to the everyday water that people use either for themselves or their farm animals. In this way people could pay taxes or obey authorities, secular or religious. To acess the water you had to take part in the religion or to be used as forced labor, or give some of your food to the priests or the upper class.

In the village were I grew up in Sweden there is similar a "holy well" from the 11th century inside the local church (which is one of the oldest in the Nordics and built when paganism was still around. The area close to the Church doesn't have many natural sources of water, so I have a similar idea here. The well was probably a considered holy back even before christianity so it was built into the church to Christianize this water cult, but also to control the use of the well water.

Interesting that you find those key shapes in Asia as well.

The Western Isles of Scotland (na toberaichan slainte nan eileanan iar)and in Ireland have similar ideas for health. Another interesting topic again Hugh.well done.

This is so interesting indeed. When you look from above the first thing I thought of was a woom. So if the worshiped fertility and motherhood I am not surprised. Something we should get back to.

Sardinia was one of the dwelling places of the little people. Never heard of any giants out here. All I know of is the hundreds of little underground dwellings to small to stand in let alone fit through some of the doorways. Very interesting though many are on private farmlands.

Is any ancient construction on Sardinia even close in technical sophistication to Santa Cristina? I have not seen it. Santa Cristina looks like the well stones were cut by machine.
