If the pipeline to Europe were going through Ukraine, Ukraine would not hesitate to drag entire Europe into their drama with Russia. That said, Ukraine could hold EU hostage.

The source of the gas is Russia, whether it is transported through Ukraine or Nordstream. The gas from Russia is available right now. LNG from the US is "being looked into". If Europe quits using Russian gas the suffering will be disproportionately European. There is always a market for that Russian gas someplace at some price.

The only thing we would get if we stop taking Russian gas in case of a war is a massive energy crunch, prices will make Europe suffer on the long term. We would lose the competitiveness to Asia further, Russia has an alternative market in Asia it could just sell the gas to China who would gladly accept this because it would be at a lower price. Also it would bond China and Russia together, China would become more competitive making Europe lose all remaining industrial companies on the longer term. This is not a good strategy for Europe, this is playing in to the hand of US LNG companies also they are selling military hardware so to me it is clear who is really profiting from this crisis.

nord stream 1 is still operational with 2 pipes, nord stream 2 is an additional 2 pipes to double the capacity. so this is all bullshit fuel is still moving into germany.

If no need of gas for Europe or alternative to Russian gas why they take interest of Russian gas ?
If US committed to supply gas or arrange Gas for Europe it's a solution. But big question mark for US commitment for past experiences.
