As Russia-Ukraine tension escalates, EU scrambles to secure gas supply

The standoff between Russia and Ukraine has Europeans worried about gas supplies.
A third of Europe's natural gas comes from Russia.
And if there is a war - Europe would have to turn to other providers.
EU leaders have been clear that a Russian act of aggression against Ukraine would have dire consequences for President Putin and his country.
It would mean an end to his hopes of bringing the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline on time, depriving him of tens of billions of dollars in revenue and depriving the EU of hundreds of billions of cubic metres of Russian gas.

Al Jazeera’s Dominic Kane reports from Germany.

Qatar and the US have dreamt about providing Qatar gas by pipeline to europe. They only miscalculated that the pipeline needs to pass over Syria, and the Syria government said no. That is why gulf countries, the US and Europe invested heavily in Syrian rebel groups that wanted to topple the Syrian government and were inactive against IS which nearly reached Damascus. Only with the help of Russia they could drive the terrorost groups back and survived....

It all revolves around reliability. Has Russia ever faulted on supplying Europe with Gas?

I have been noticing how the new out has changed it tongue in favour of the US. All this talk of Russian aggression and dependancy from Russia (Putin) is all a cleaver use of hype by not mentioning the US and UK interference in matters that DO NOT concern them. It's a EU diplomatic issue. The US and UK are not in the EU or Europe

Gas inventory is also very low in Europe. If there's a cold February, things can get very interesting.

And at what price? Qatar gas will cost an arm and US gas will cost a leg due to logistics which in turn will triple energy bills from the extortion they are right now. 🙄

It should be up to Europe if they want to buy Russia's gas not united states

And as an additional comment: the irony of the situation will be that - as there is a world wide gas shortage - the deliveries of LNG from e.g. Qatar will produce a gap in the world gas supply, which will immediately lead to Russia filling up that gap with production of more LNG to other countries, just that the logistic chain for gas deliveries will get longer and more expensive and with additional CO2 emissions.... In the end, nobody benefits from that.

Ok - now we know why the US is so interested in making this bigger than it has to be.

" EU scrambles to secure gas supply " So why Germany still did not signed off on Nordstream 2 ? A little bit of a manufactured crisis ?

I like it when the usa says dont use Russian gas as they will use as a weapon. Yet usa haven't got anough gas to make up the short fall.
Even after they asked Australia. They are still short.. so what does usa do? They buy Russian gas and sell it to Germany at top price. When Germany could have opened nord stream2. And got the same gas a lot cheaper.... double standards. And protectionism big time.for the usa. So who using nord stream 2 as a weapon, yep the usa.
