Take a look at the flag of Romania.

Now, take a look at the flag of Chad. Notice anything similar? The truth is, these flags are basically the exact same, so how did two completely different countries end up with the same flag?

Well, all the way back in the mid 1800s, Romania was the first to adopt this flag, with the colors each representing a desirable attribute. However, less than 100 years later, in the aftermath of world war II, Romania became a communist state, and put a seal in the center of their flag. Down south, Chad becomes independent from France, and adopts this French inspired flag. Since at the time, Romania had a seal in the middle of their flag, these flags weren’t the same.

However, once communism fell in Romania, the seal was removed from the flag, making it the same as Chad’s. Chad was pretty angry about this, so they appealed to the United Nations, asking Romania to change their flag. Romania said “no” arguing that they had been using this flag for longer, and therefore have the right to use it.

Haiti and Liechtenstein used to have the exact same flag and because they're in different hemispheres, Liechtenstein is very small, and Haiti was very poor, they had never been together to notice. That was, until the 1936 Olympics. Liechtenstein saw the Haitian competitors flying their civilian flag (🇭🇹 is the national flag, the civil flag doesn't have the coat of arms) that was exactly like theirs. A bicolor with two horizontal bands, a dark blue at top and a red one on the bottom. After that, Liechtenstein decided that they would change their flag to prevent confusion in the future and added a crown to the upper hoist side 🇱🇮 a change that has persisted to this day.
