What bothers me as a mixed race person is that most people expect me to choose a side... it’s like I can’t be both

Your ethnicity does not define you as a person. Your actions do.

I think the hardest part about being multiracial is that disconnect from one of your cultures. If you're black and Chinese, you may look black on the outside, but if you aren't raised to embrace your Chinese heritage, there's always going to be that feeling of being disassociated from your other culture. People expect you to 'act black' because of your appearance, but they tend to forget that you are also part Asian, and you have separate cultural traditions because of your Chinese heritage. It reminds of this Miss Japan video I saw years ago. The winner of Miss Japan was a biracial woman that was born and raised in Japan, but was half Japanese and half black (I think she was Jamaican or from another Caribbean country). A lot of people were complaining and saying she didn't deserve the title because she didn't look like a 'typical Japanese' person, but it's like everyone forgot that SHE IS JAPANESE BECAUSE SHE WAS BORN AND RAISED IN JAPAN!

My Japanese side of the family always criticizes me for not being able to speak their language, and for being raised “like an American”.

It's society's fault that mixed ethnicity people feel torn about their identity. People are people, that's it.

The "what are you?" question is the worst. I know people are curious, but it feels alienating like I'm a thing not a person. A better alternative is to ask "what's your ethnic/cultural background?"

This made me cry. I am half Japanese-half African American and I've never related so much to a bunch of strangers. Everything they said I've felt and understand. Thanks for this video BuzzFeed

People would ask my mom if she was the babysitter too. She told me it made her feel kinda sad because it would momentarily shift her perception of how she fits in with her own children in society. (Mom is latino, born in Mexico, Dad is from German and Irish descent) The thing is that every family fits and when you have love in your heart for them, you tend not to notice the surface.

I'm half Chinese, quarter Hungarian, and quarter Finnish!!! I feel lucky to have so many different cultures in me and we should all be proud of our ethnicities!!!

I’m Chinese-Malaysian/Filipino. I have one of those ambiguous Asian faces, that wherever I go around Asia, they often think I’m a local 😂 It’s always really awkward

I'm a Japanese, Chinese, Cambodian, Jamaican, Thai laos, and Indian female. Seeing this video made me feel better about being mixed- raced. I've experienced so much hate for being mix-raced from all races, even on the internet they would say that "I'm lying about my race" or that "I don't have curly hair so I can't be mixed" that "I'm being racist for lying about my race" they tell me "to stop lying about being Japanese just because I like anime", and so much more, that really upsets me because this is who I am! I am black and asian. for them to call me "racist" and to say that "I'm lying" about who i really am hurt me. I've also experienced people saying that I'm not apart of the black community because i am only part black, the same thing with the asian community. that really did upset me because even though i am not fully one race doesn't mean what I'm part of shouldn't be accepted into the community. I am now stronger and prouder of my race, I am beautiful, my brown skin is beautiful, my wavy hair is beautiful, etc.

I hate how this happens so much. I have dealt with this too because even though I am mixed, I look like what I majority am, so people laugh and call me a liar
