Lala Lajpat Rai also did non violent protest but was beaten to death. But British always ensured that Gandhi was never hurt. He was important tool.

Remember Lal Lajpatrai the leader who laid down his life protesting against the Simon Commission. He was beaten down to death in front of everyone. People who died at Jallianwala bagh these are the people who defined "protest against British rule"

I have seen the Aga Khan Palace in Pune where Mr gandhi were detained and I m shocked to see the bath tub and wash basin in their bathroom that they were used. How luxurious life he had !

Many times he used to drawback his movements by giving some stupid reasons. Ex- Non cooperation movement, he withdrew it because there was violence in Chauri Chaura which led to death of 22 policemen (even though violence was started by police only).

It was the extremist (Lal Bal Pal) and revolutionaries (Bhagat Singh, azad, Sen, Savarkar and later Bose) who poses real threat to Brits....
Thus, Brit established Gandhi as the mass leader. It was a facade that uhh we're afraid of his non violence and satyagraha... Yeah follow him.
In reality, it minor inconvenience for them and whenever people usurped the power(chauri chaura incident) Gandhi withdrew his movement.

As a young youth we should not consider mahatma gandhi as father of nation, we must go for CHANAKYA or Chandragupta Maurya or Ashoka or chattrapati shivaji maharaj....

As a non Indian i always though that how come every other freedom fighter (peaceful or non-peaceful) was killed by the Britishers, except Gandhi. Rani Laxmibai with an army died fighting Britishers and bhagat singh's 116 days hunger strike and still foreigners know only gandhi as a freedom fighter. Britishers were capable of killing youngsters that were constantly changing appearances and hiding and still Gandhi managed to do protest openly in old age.
