Indian Rupee vs US Dollar vs British Pounds and other currencies since 1947 (Exchange rate for INR)

This video shows us how the Indian Rupee compared with other prominent currencies since it got independence in 1947.

The value of a currency, just like any other commodity, is determined by supply and demand. The supply of a currency and its demand in the market. Let us consider the example of USD – INR pair to understand this better. The RBI maintained a reserve of US dollars to ensure fixed exchange rate.

At the time of independence (in 1947), India's currency was pegged to pound sterling, and the exchange rate was a shilling and six pence for a rupee — which worked out to Rs 13.33 to the pound.

On 15th August 1947 the exchange rate between Indian rupee and US Dollar was equal to one (i.e., 1 $= 1 Indian Rupee)

We see the rise and fall of all the currencies but compared to the relative value of Indian Rupee.

The rupee is extremely sensitive to the fund flows into the debt market. Foreign portfolio investors pull money out of Indian debt when yields on Indian bonds spike or increase in their home country. The outflows put pressure on the Indian currency, making it weaker.

Accordingly, while a weaker rupee was surprising in the calendar year 2020, it is likely to strengthen 1.3 per cent and average 73.5 against the US dollar in the financial year 2022-23, as compared to an average level of 74.4 in the financial year 2021-22.

Global ratings firm Fitch has revised its forecast for the Indian rupee and expects it to average stronger at Rs 75.50 to a dollar in 2021. The rating agency has forecasted that rupee could trade at Rs 77 to a dollar in 2022.

The Khalsa Raj NanakShai was worth 13 British Pounds back before the empire fell in 1849

This is due to a lot of factors, how rich the land is, how people didn’t spend money cause or rare taxes or growing your own food and volunteer work (seva)
