Drag race: BMW X5 M50d versus Range Rover Sport Supercharged V8

In a clash that just ten years ago would have seemed impossible or just downright silly, we lined up BMW's most powerful diesel SUV against the new Range Rover Sport, which uses an engine shared with the Jaguar F-Type to develop an incredible 375kW (502hp).

Both manufacturers claim their cars accelerate from 0-100km/h (0-62mph) in the same time, so we honestly had no idea which car would win over the quarter mile drag race.

What we did know is that one of these cars would have a bit more fuel in the tank at the end of the day.

I have an X5 M50d and to get max performance you have to change manually on the paddles ! By just planting your foot it revs too high & comes out of its max torque! Get someone who knows the X5 M50d to do the drag race & I bet the outcome would be different

How is it fair to put a Diesel against a Petrol? If you want a true comparisons then you put the Range Rover Supercharge V8 against the X5 M, not the X5 M50d.

Nice comparison. With both cars claiming the same 0-100 figure I think the diesel vs petrol clash makes a lot of sense. Interesting to see how different the acceleration curve between the 2 cars is. I guess the race distance is the 1 important unknown here. Nice one!

This video is fucking pointless. You're putting a x5 m50d which is a 380+ bhp diesel against a 500+ Supercharged PETROL. obviously the RR is going to win. Do it properly and use the actual fucking X5 M.

Ive only been a passenger in a RR sport SVR, but driven an X6 M50d. Both sound great. They make very good progress even when doing the speed limit obviously, its just they are effortless to drive.

oh i love the begginning of this video, " i think at one stage BMW once said they will never make a 4X4 or a diesel or a turbo charged engine it's obvious im driving  4x4 diesel with not one but 3 turbos lol

I dont think the bmw was in sport plus with the shifter knocked over as well because i didnt hear the anti lag breaking up which we know it will do. Either way, the v8 has more hp so in the end its always going to outrun the bmw in a straight line, but coming out of turns and so on, the bmw probably has quite the advantage over the high topped heavy Range rover
