Thank you Hunter Fan co, the colored wired diagram/picture @ 1:14 helped a lot. Initially had hooked up all blacks together and motor ran at full speed lol, and the remote could only be used to control the lights. My dad helped me install but he's too old school and wouldn't listen to me stating to follow the darn hunter manual. He thought all hots just go together....so the colored pic here vs the black and white diagram that ships with the fan made a huge difference in the install process.

(For others) - We didn't have an existing fixture so had to do everything from scratch. Luckily, access to the attic was right outside the room. Bought our own romex and just tapped into existing romex. For hunter fans with remote, it is possible to forgo the remote and install a dimmer switch for both the light and fan, but you gotta study switches/home electricty for a couple days. Brother who is no longer with us did 2 "remote only" hunters with a dual dimmer panel for light and fan speed. Got everything from home depot. If you go this route just know you're not installing it the way hunter designed it for, so you'll most likely have to do your own troubleshooting instead of calling the company for help with diy dimmer siwtch route.

I purchased the Dempsey (with receiver) to replace my bedroom ceiling light that is controlled by a light switch. From the ceiling, I had a capped off black wire, red, white and ground. If you would like to continue to use your light switch, I would suggest not following the Hunter instructions. If you do, the light switch will now no longer work.

There are two way to get this to work properly if you'd like to continue to use your light switch: (1) the light switch controls the fan light and the fan is controlled by the receiver (receiver light control will not work in this configuration), or (2) the light switch controls the entire fan assembly, meaning the light switch has to be in the 'on' position for the fan/light to work, but the receiver will control both the light and fan.

I chose #1 because I'd like to continue to use the light switch for the room/fan light. I did this by connecting the red wire from the ceiling to the blue wire from the fan housing and capped off the blue on the receiver.

If you'd like to setup like #2, you would have to connect the red from the ceiling to the black on the receiver and cap off the black form the ceiling.

Hope this helps others because Hunter had no information for this that I could find.

I have a red wire (from house) that I have capped. All the other wires are installed accordingly. I have a wall switch with a dimmer. When I turn it on, it turns and ceiling fan spins a little then flicker then stops working.
I’ve tried connecting the red wire (from house) to the black as well, and I get the same result.
Is it better leaving the remote control portion out. connect, black to black, white to white, then ground, ground to ground, cap off blue? and cap red?

Is it possible to wire the hunter fan so that the wall switch controls the light, but the remote only controls the fan?

I am TRYING to figure out Hunter Model 54188. I have found SOME internet descriptions (and also on Hunter's site) that says the remote receiver is PREINSTALLED. Problem I'm having is that I'm replacing two (defective) Hunter fans that needed a SEAPARATE receiver in the canopy. So now the OLD wiring no longer applies and the NEW wiring is VERY confusing. Nothing in the manual that came with the replacement fans addresses a RED ceiling wire and a capped off CEILING BLACK wire. So ... I have RED and WHITE from the ceiling, BLUE BLACK and WHITE on the fan (that CAME with a remote control). Does this model have a PREINSTALLED receiver or NOT? If so - HOW do I wire RED and WHITE from ceiling to BLUE BLACK and WHITE on the fan? (BTW: I ended up here because I've been on hold for HOURS at Hunter's Tech Support ph number)

Okay hunter - how do you install one of your fans with the remote receiver when there are White, Black, Red and a bare copper wire coming out of the ceiling? I have searched and there is nothing at all online, in your instructions and I have been oin hold for hours with your customer service . Crap customer experience.

I wired mine exactly like this and nothing is working, my old fan used the red wire because it was on a switch, so I capped the red and used the black and still nothing. I’m wondering if I have a faulty receiver 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Video does not address the black white red house wires nor the various other fan color code designs. This woman will help you to burn your house down if you think she’s giving you a full understanding of the subject.

What if I want to use the red wire so I don't have a useless switch in my bedroom? Which one can I wire that to?

What to do with an extra bare copper wire that isn't in any of the instructions? Same for an extra white wire from the box

Here's a tip. Put the whole damn thing together while it's on the ground because it's a pain in the ass trying to do it while it's hanging up there

So I followed these instructions and everything work but now my wall switch doesn’t turn the light on and off. If anyone can help I would truly appreciate it.
