Running wire for a ceiling fan in a finished ceiling & wall

A room needed a fan but wasn't wired for one. I installed a new fan receptacle using a straddle box on a ceiling joist and ran wire through the attic and down the wall to two new switches, one to control the fan light and a separate Lutron Diva switch to control the fan motor speed.

This is exactly what I needed. Straight to the point. I've watched plenty of videos of "professionals" where they just ramble about a bunch of unnecessary stuff and confuse people more. You explained things perfectly and to the point and hell even provided diagrams. U just earned a subscriber. Thank you.

As an master electrician… you’re giving me a heartattack 😳

Thanks. I got a lot out of the video. Im putting fans in my garage so this is good knowledge. A trick I have used countless times…you made an extra hole to pull the wire. When I need to make an access hole, for plumbing etc, I cover the hole with a blank switch plate or if it’s bigger, I use a cold air vent. So far no one has ever noticed. Then there is zero drywalling repairs.

Dude I take forever too. But my dad was a master electrician and he taught me the first thing is to always make sure the power is off first. I learned the hard way one time and now I never forget it. Glad you're ok.

I can deal with home electric improvements with ease, yet, I never went beyond typical single box switches & outlets. This was the first time I used 14-3 wire (fan) & 12-2 (power) to install a ceiling fan with a 2 gang box successfully. You saved the day & The Lady is very, very, happy. Thank you very much!

Great Video! I personally would have just grabbed power from tapping into the switch next to the fan switch, just tap power from the bottom so those switches on that wall all run on the same breaker. Plus it saves having to run extra wire since romex costs a fortune!

Great job! The wires in the switch box gave you trouble because there was too much jacket left on the wire. Should be at least 1/4 inch sticking out from the clamp connector but not really more than 1/2 or 5/8 inch. This gives you more room and it's way easier to bend the wires back. Other than that, it came out great.

Excellent video! Great step-by-step editing. Thanks for being honest on the difficulty involved and the actual "shock". It is so easy for DIYers to forget to turn the power off (speaking from experience, of course.) My advice...go slow and double check breaker is off, then check dead with voltage tester as he did in video.

Best video I have seen in a long long time

One of two things I’d do differently, 1 strip more of the wire jacket off leaving 1/4” of romex sheath.

2, wire up the fan to the left switch then the light on the right.
3, add electrical tape on devices and finish installation.

Enjoyed the video but consider buying a glowrod or fishing tools. No need to cut an extra hole in the wall!

Great content! Install steps were very transparent!

Cold have saved cutting a whole in the wall and just bought a 25ft snake. $30

a small pony tail from the light switch box next to the new switches would have been so much easier man and on the same breaker.

Could have daisy-chained the power wire at the switch to the other switch (2-wires on the terminal) and eliminate the wire nut (and possible problem)

I’m not sure I can rely on the video, not one single f-bomb was dropped. So, how reliable could it be?

Do you have to have a special fan to control fan speed and light with two switches? I love this idea and want to implement this in my instal. thank you for this idea.
