Let Christianity Be Weird! - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

Friends, Happy Easter! Christ is risen—Alleluia, Alleluia! Recently, I had a public conversation with the popular historian Tom Holland. Someone from the crowd asked him, “What’s the call of our time?” and he said, “Let Christianity be weird.” When I was coming of age, there was a tendency to reduce Christianity to just another vague mysticism or moral system. If that’s all Christianity is, who cares? I’m with Tom Holland: let Christianity be weird, because Christianity is weird. And a lot of the weirdness focuses on the thing we celebrate today: the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead.

My Mother was Catholic my Father was Protestant, and we never went to church growing up. I always wanted to know about Jesus but my Mother didn't have a lot of info for me. I tried reading a Bible but couldn't make sense of it. One day in 1971 living in the Bay Area California I went to a friend's house and met her Aunt who was a Hippie type, that looked to me like her face was glowing. I couldn't stop looking at her. Finally she spoke and started talking about Jesus, who He was and more importantly, who He IS and how He was alive and I could know Him now! I was blown away. I was 14 years old and met my Lord and Savior and was born again! Talk about Christianity being weird! People called us Jesus Freaks and there were many Hippies that met Jesus and their lives were radically changed. Back then we would hitchhike to different churches and witness to the people who picked us up. At the church there were people who sat on the floor barefoot and worshipping our Jesus. I saw many amazing things happen back then. My parents were scared of me and now I could pick up the Bible where suddenly I read it with understanding as the Holy Spirit opened up the meaning of it all, even with Old English. We the church, the body of Christ have become too comfortable in our little pews. We look like the world, we don't take a stand and become the weird you're speaking of. We allowed the world to close our churches, we obeyed man rather than God. There were a few brave men of God who refused. We need to wake up, the world doesn't need people like them, they need our radical, yet living Jesus to shine. No more entertaining, no more compromise, people need to know they are a sinner in need of a savior. That is when they come to Him.
