Suffering is a part of our journey as Catholics. We are all called to suffer for Christ.

I believe that many Catholics dont realize this. People need to understand that God gives great amounts of grace at times of lingering illness. And I believe that grace goes to all involved and not just to a patient.

People have NO CONCEPT as to why God allows suffering or the amount of souls that they can save through suffering. They THINK they have all the answers but they don’t know God’s plan. TRUST GOD!!!

I remember when my mom passed, someone mentioned about euthanasia... because she was on hospice. I can't speak for all, but please understand that making a person's last time on earth with drugs that take away the pain and discomfort - does not hasten their death. Both my mom and dad had hospice on their last days and wanted to die at home. If we had not honored their request (along with no life saving measures, including feeding tubes, etc - just let God take them when their heart could beat no more), they would have died in a nursing home probably in a room with many dying people. Instead, my dad slept in his bedroom for 3 days, with family and friends visiting regularly - until he quietly passed. He was given meds to make him comfortable, reduce coughing, and other things that can happen in his state - but not high enough dosages to hasten his remaining time.

I'm a hospice nurse and a Catholic and it's heartbreaking to me how mainstream this mindset has become. My state does not allow assisted suicide, but I can tell you I'm asked either directly or indirectly, on a regular basis, if there is a way things can be "hastened." 💔💔💔 At this point my response is nearly canned.
"While we won't don't anything to slow down the natural death, we will not do anything to speed it up."

Many folks who come into care are Catholic and even our spiritual department treats them as troublesome because of our views on accepting suffering. It's deeply troubling, very relevant and I appreciate you for bringing it up.❤️

People also forget that suffering on earth, especially near death, helps us in purgatory.
Lightening the load.

I have arranged my funeral pick up the readings and I don't want women to do the readings. I don't want my daughter to talk about me. God knows all about me. I only want prayers.

I was caring for my dying husband who had pancreatic cancer. He was in pain. My sister in law demanded that I overdose him! Saying I was cruel. I am not God. He died the man God meant him to be on Christmas Day, being granted the gift of final perseverance.

Yes, God has everything in control. He permits suffering to redeem souls. There are those of us who are victim souls who offer their suffering to save others. 😢

We, even as Catholics, have no Heavenly or God given right to judge others.

My friend's grandfather was denied a Catholic funeral decades ago. They never told me why, but the family is against all Carholics now. I've been working on trying to help them back through prayer and through action, but its a uphill battle. Please keep them all in your prayers 🙏❤️

As a Catholic, these are beautiful scriptural passages that help me in my faith

1 Peter 5:10: “And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you.”

Revelation 21:1, 4: “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. . . . He [God] will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more.”

“Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking* in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church..”
Colossians 1:24

Funerals have turned Protestant in a way.
When was the last time at a funeral you heard of the ‘four last things’ or heard family ask people to pray for their loved one?
Sadly the funerals I’ve been to recently (that weren’t family) never once spoke of the four last things nor that everyone there must pray for the dearly departed soul.
Even the family have took the custom of going up and speaking of the persons life and in all honestly only focusing on the good and sadly our priests hands are tied by what the family want to happen during the funeral.

Being brought up in Irish catholic culture we were told from a young age we have no idea if someone is in heaven - we can hope they are especially if they received ‘last rites’ and the apostolic pardon however only God knows if they are in heaven hence why we must always pray for our departed who could be among the holy souls in purgatory.

I am a Canadian Catholic registered nurse. Since the legalization of medical assistance in dying (MAiD), I have had Catholic patients ask for MAID. The usual response when I remind them of the Catholic Church's teaching on euthanasia or assisted suicide is that the Church cannot tell them what to do. Also, they don't understand the value of suffering, of uniting their suffering with Our Lord's suffering for the salvation of souls.

We can't judge people because we can't fathom their suffering unless we ourselves go through it even if they're catholic or not. Let just keep it between God and them. Jesus is the best judge.

My mother suffered so much in her dying and became Catholic 6 weeks before dying. We celebrated each sacrament she received. Mother was suffering so much she at one point asked when will I die. We told her we do not know the time nor the hour. The next day she said I see a bright star, I see my daughter that was a Muslim and her grandmother who was Transcendentalist. Jesus is so great a love. Only He can truly judge. But I too am against being killed to get out of the suffering. I pray I make it through my own mattyrdom

My mom had a friend who’s grandson died at the young age of 14, he had undiagnosed diabetes and didn’t have a good diet, anyways at the funeral, before mass, the Father asked if the kid had his sacraments, baptism and first communion? They answered no!😢 the Father said unfortunately I can NOT celebrate him a mass and can NOT bless his burial ground. The family was shocked and devastated. But I mean really? Kid was 14 and had zero sacraments!🤨😮🤨🥲🥲 May his soul RIP…

Suicides have been allowed Catholic funerals since 1983 as long as the priest is willing to do it. I know a guy I went to school with, he was in my brother's class, who served in Nam, came back with issues and committed suicide. He received a Catholic funeral and is buried in Holy Ground.
