Teaching Tips for Narrative Tenses (with The Beatles)

I shot this video to go over our approach when teaching narrative tenses. It’s another special request video so feel free to send me your questions. Tom and I will get on it 😁

I know it’s become trendy to think that grammar is evil but I disagree! 😈

If grammar explanations solely focus on the form, or are as wrong as “it’s a long action in the past” then yes, grammar might seem evil!

In reality, no element of a language survives if it doesn’t fulfill a function, answer a need in communication.

If you find that need, you’ve got the perfect explanation that can lead learners to fluency 😃

In this video, I go over our approach to teaching narrative tenses with a story about The Beatles 🪲🎸🥁

V2 or didn’t + V1 = main story/moves the story
Was/were + Ving = gives context/paints a picture
Had + V3 = gives background/explains the past

I’ll follow up with a second video using a story from Titanic, of course 🚢

And with a video on 3D Stories, a great activity to help learners build their reflexes and develop their fluency in English 👌

That is all you need to guide your students to proper, accurate and fluent use of narrative tenses in English 👍
