West Texas GHOST TOWN

Established in 1908, Fluvanna Texas began as a small railroad town but the invention of highways left the town without ways to bring in revenue and was eventually abandoned by most families and the ones that stayed would pass away. Now the town has a small population of 108 people.

The store on you entered was my husband's Grandfather's, Frank Moore. He was a former Secret Service Agent and had also been a Union Pacific mechanic in Palestine Texas. This was a general merchandise store and before the Depression and Dustbowl was a successful store with the highest Dun and Bradstreet rating. When the hard times hit the customers could no longer pay and the store folded. Nothing inside the store in your video was from my husband's family. Your other video from the Fluvanna Cemetery displayed the headstones of two of his lost children; Carl Miller Moore and a stillborn daughter that was never named. Carl Miller died when he was 6. He had jumped from the roof of a barn the day before he died. He was shook up from the jump but had seemed fine when he went to bed. He was gone in the morning. One of the strongest early memories my Father in Law had was of his elder brother, Carl Miller. They moved from Fluvanna around 1932 for a homestead near Zuni Salt Lake in Northwest New Mexico.

I lived in Fluvanna when I was a young boy in the 50s. I refer you to the 2 red brick buildings that you went to right after showing community center. The one on the corner was a Cafe that I went to with my grand dad several times a week to drink coffee with a few other farmers. Just to the right, the building that you walked into was the local Post Office. The door on the left was where you went to pick up your mail from the small post boxes. The door on the right was the one you went into to mail your packages and receive packages that would not fit into your mailbox.
Directly across the street, on the corner, there used to be a large 2-story General Mercantile store. As you walk out and approach the side of that building, you can see a large building in the background with a white roof. That was the Methodist Church that I went to as a kid. I believe it is now used for storage of wind turbine blades, parts and etc.
Thanks for sharing this video, sure brought back a lot of memories

I left Snyder in 1983 for the Navy but I used to do oilfield work in and around Fluvanna with my grandfather and some of the locals had a little cafe set up there and they made the BEST fried pies with seasonal fruit ! I still remember where some of the oil wells are that we tended to !

My dad used to tell a story about getting a lowboy trailer high-centered on a train track near Fluvanna. Only last year a buddy took me hunting on his lease just east of Fluvanna. I wanted to drive into town just to see how the place was holding up but he wanted me to see some of the surrounding countryside instead. There’s a fairly modern house, (1970s era?) near there that has been abandoned and is in great disrepair. It’s both heartbreaking and fascinating to see what’s become of so much of my homeland. I’m in my sixties and it seems this land was so prosperous only a few years ago, but time has tragically slipped away faster than would seem possible.

Bob, Olive, and their mother Toochie White lived there. I can’t remember all of the names of the family. They ended up moving just over the Mitchell County line not far from another ghost town named Silver, Texas. I believe the Dad was also named Bob. He was working on a ranch and living with his family in the old Wilkes Family home around 1968 when a tornado hit the house. He was taking off his boots when he noticed a mesquite tree limb pass the window. They all made it to the basement. When the storm was over it wiped out all of the house but the bathroom. His one boot still stood upright and he never found the other one. It picked up an eighteen wheeler on Hwy 208 and the driver survived. A horse had a two by four still hanging from it’s gut and walking around and had to be put down. Missing cattle were discovered later across Hwy 208 from where they were picked up. The White family had no where to stay so they became our neighbors for a year or two at Silver. This is my first time seeing Fluvanna though the Whites talked often about the town. Thanks for reading and thanks for the video

Once I was driving through there, and residents were burning down a grocery store, which hadn't been in use for years. As I recall from earlier days, it had a screen door on it, and wooden floors.

South of Fluvanna a few miles is a strange, old abandoned house, u-shaped, as I remember. A resident told me it was inhabited by an odd fellow who "kept to himself". It's very spooky, and very interesting.

Hey maybe All those guys that have those ATVS and Dirt bikes should go to those deserted and abandon places where the police won't bother them.

I was expecting you to find a rattlesnake inside the building that you walked into.
