I've been a Power Pro user for over 15 years now. I never held any delusions that it was the best braid, but it always served me well at a reasonable price.
Last summer, my best friend, whom I taught to fish, went on an international fishing trip to the wilds of Ontario Canada chasing smallmouth, walleye, pike, and musky. He asked me to help him get outfitted for his trip, and one of the things he wanted to do was re-spool all the reels he was bringing, just for the peace of mind that he's got all fresh line. Naturally, I steered him toward Power Pro... He wanted 20# on one of his reels, and he had some lighter and some heavier too. Once he began fishing with the 20# line, he said he was breaking off a lot... And it wasn't breaking at his leader knot either. It got so bad that his guide began to suspect the line was faulty... They stripped some line from the reel and were able to pull it until it broke with bare hands! So they tried to do the same with some 10# power pro and they couldn't break it. When he came home, we tried the same thing... Sure enough, I could break the 20# line, but not the 10#! We began to speculate why/how this could happen... Maybe they put lighter line in the package? Nope, the diameter of the 20# was definately larger than the 10# line and smaller than the 30# line. We figured it must be a bad batch, and got through quality control... Anyways, this is a long way of saying there's at least two anglers looking for a new brand of braid for next season, and we appreciate your work and sharing your findings.

How about a metric measuring cost/value. That Varivas is also more expensive than any line available

A video idea, I recommend you to test a braided line that has a teflon coating, such as P line TCB braid 8

Thanks for sharing the video . I enjoyed watching this. May I have recommendation which you could consider to add more criteria besides your criteria’s
- same size of braided fishing line
- float and sinking line must be different in your test
- X8 and X12 is not same
- shocking strength
- absorb water
- water cut strength of line
- long durability

Thank you

I love how professionally and unbiased your tests are made. However the only test you may not be able to do is longevity/durability. I have used the Gliss in 17kg, this "braid" is great to cast, super strong and very thin, but after a few times of use the line starts to split - the individual strands become loose, seems like the material/process the use to bind the strands is not strong enough and this line is not braided. Every time i went fishing I had to discard the first 10-20 feet. I think this is why such a great line was not so great after all and hence the demand fell. For me my go to line has been the Sufix 832 for a few years now.

Majorcraft DanganX has to be one of the most underrated braids ever. It comfortably casts 100m+ on baits and lures on the right setup, pulls the plug out of the ocean with its breaking strain and is so supple. I rate it higher than Varivas 8, only because I've had some weird wind knots on that.

Such valuable information. Much appreciated. Plz test the new Varivas 8 which is supposed to be better than the discontinued pe type II.
Once again thank you.

You should have added in the thickness % to line weight class.
will determine how much or how little line can be spooled.
But otherwise i have recently been inteoduced to the shimano pitbull and also shimano grappler. bit more on the expensive end although they have been working well so far

4 out of 5 top performance braid were izanas made in Japan which still exist in the market, while the 1st rank is monotex made in Germany which is very hard to find in the market.
Where is spectra braid made in USA?

Is there anyway to add a metric to test for vulnerability to wind knots? I purchased the varivas multipurpose braid based off your high recommendation but it loves to wind knot. Imho, the number of instances that I experienced wind knotting was enough to not use the braid =\. Thanks again for all the great scientific analysis! Cheers guys and happy new year! 🙌🙌🙌

Have you ever done tests on really heavy braids such as 100lb+. Looking to get a good line for sturgeon in a sharp rock covered area.

Reviews suggest that gliss is great out of the box, but falls apart very quickly
