LEGAL Halibut - Surf Fishing SoCal [Lucky Craft]

Grateful to get my first legal halibut of 2021 while surf fishing in SoCal while throwing the Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110 Super Glow Cherry Berry.

This is the peak season for stalking halibut from the surf, so if you've ever considered getting out there, NOW IS THE TIME!!

With your set up do you always use a leader when fishing Halis? Im going straight braid to my Luckys with good results. Maybe I'm missing some potential catches with not being more stealthy? I do use set up similar to this when Im going for croaker and corbina in the summer with tiny mosquito hooks on sand crabs. Perhaps, I will try a leader and see if my numbers pump up!!!

Back on the beach! Nice fish, brother, and thanks for the tips to help the rest of us get in on the action. It's interesting how so many California surf fish can be found in such shallow water. I feel like I'm getting better at reading structure but it's still very hit or miss for me. You can't get better unless you're out there, though, and I'll take hit or miss compared to being totally blind like when I first started. I've been going every weekend for months straight and can't wait to get out again this weekend!

Nice Benji. I’ve got 4 halibut this year, none legal. Awesome you released him. I’m 100% catch and release. When I release a good halibut, the other anglers around me look at me like I’m crazy.

Nice work dude! Lucky crafts are the best in most situations and places, you can’t really go wrong fishing them in mid range shallow waters! Gonna start working my way back to the salt after the last few months of trout fishing haha 😆

Hey Benji, how far would you say that you cast outward into the surf when you are doing this? It's hard to see the point of impact with the water on the casts. Here in San Diego the water's only about a foot deep out for 25 yards or so at most of the sandy beaches.
